Last time we dove deep into the costs of waste, and honestly, it was rather sad... BUT! We can always be positive and look at waste costs this way: How can waste work for me? Let’s think beyond the trash can! Effective waste management isn't just good for the environment, it's good for your wallet and your reputation. Here's why: Save Money: Lower trash bills: Recycle more, throw away less, and you'll pay less to get rid of your waste. Get tax breaks: Donate food to those in need and you might get a tax break! Use less new stuff: Recycling saves money by using less new materials, which helps your business and the planet. Help the Planet: Turn trash into treasure: Recycle paper, plastic, and other materials to create new products. Create a circular economy: Instead of throwing things away, find ways to use them again and again. Look Good, Feel Good: Attract environmentally conscious customers: Show people you care about the planet and they'll want to do business with you. Avoid fines: Follow waste management rules and you won't have to pay penalties. Work Smarter, Not Harder: Streamline your processes: Reduce waste and you'll have less to manage, making your business more efficient. Motivate your team: Get your employees involved in sustainability and they'll be happier and more productive. A Healthier Planet: Clean up the air and water: Reduce pollution by throwing away less and recycling more. Save our natural resources: Use less new stuff and we'll have more trees, water, and other resources for the future. The Bottom Line: Waste management is about more than just throwing things away and paying for it financially or with your health. Waste, is for now an unavoidable part of our lives and producing, so we should see it as an opportunity to improve our ways! We all toss stuff in the bin, but did you know that waste has hidden costs that are seriously impacting not only our planet but our wallets as well? Surprised? well lets see how much waste actually costs us: Financial cost: Landfill fees are soaring In the EU, 795 million tonnes of waste (excluding major mineral waste) were generated in 2022. This massive amount translates into substantial costs for waste collection and disposal. Food waste is particularly alarming, with estimates showing that €172 billion is wasted on uneaten food and an additional €220 billion spent on managing this waste. Environmental: Improper waste disposal can lead to pollution, affecting air, water, and soil quality. This not only harms wildlife but also poses risks to human health. The inefficient management of waste contributes to the depletion of natural resources, as more materials are extracted to replace what is wasted. Health: Poor waste management can lead to disease outbreaks and exposure to hazardous materials, increasing healthcare costs and lowering our quality of life. Regulatory: Businesses that fail to comply with waste management regulations may face fines and penalties, which can hurt their financial standing and reputation. Operational: Companies that do not manage waste effectively often incur higher operational costs due to increased disposal fees and the need for more frequent waste collection. Can you imagine the ammount of different resoarses its costing us? The goood news is it is not too late to do something, it never is! We can change this! By reducing waste, recycling, and composting, we can save money, protect our environment, and build a healthier future for everyone. We often talk about circularity in terms of materials and products, but what about the circularity of knowledge and skills? What if we approached learning and sharing as a sustainable practice? This september we already talked a lot about Circularity as a concept, but have you ever noticed, that we hear "circular economy" thrown around a lot these days, especially when talking about sustainability. Are they the same thing? Not quite! While they share a common goal – a healthier planet – they have distinct approaches. 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 - 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹.  Lets imagine a phone. In a circular economy, that phone doesn't get thrown away. Instead, it's recycled, reused, or made into a new phone. It's like a closed loop where materials keep getting used. 𝘕𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦: We use things again and again, instead of throwing them away. 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳: We make things to last, so we don't need to make new ones. 𝘚𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯: We design products so they can be recycled or reused easily. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Sustainability is about making sure everyone can live well on a healthy planet. It's about finding the right balance between: 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺: Making sure everyone has a good life. 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺: Making sure everyone is treated fairly. 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵: Protecting our planet for the future. 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆&𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺. Now lets look at them as a whole: Think of sustainability as a big umbrella, covering all the things we do to protect the planet. Circularity is like one of those things, a powerful tool that helps us reach sustainability. 𝘌𝘹𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦: Sustainability is like building a strong, beautiful, and eco-friendly house. Circularity is like using recycled materials and energy-saving design to build that house. Sustainability is a strong concept and movement. It has a lot of tools - and circularity is only one of them.
