This september we already talked a lot about Circularity as a concept, but have you ever noticed, that we hear "circular economy" thrown around a lot these days, especially when talking about sustainability. Are they the same thing? Not quite! While they share a common goal – a healthier planet – they have distinct approaches. 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 - 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹. Lets imagine a phone. In a circular economy, that phone doesn't get thrown away. Instead, it's recycled, reused, or made into a new phone. It's like a closed loop where materials keep getting used. 𝘕𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦: We use things again and again, instead of throwing them away. 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳: We make things to last, so we don't need to make new ones. 𝘚𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯: We design products so they can be recycled or reused easily. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Sustainability is about making sure everyone can live well on a healthy planet. It's about finding the right balance between: 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺: Making sure everyone has a good life. 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺: Making sure everyone is treated fairly. 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵: Protecting our planet for the future. 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆&𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺. Now lets look at them as a whole: Think of sustainability as a big umbrella, covering all the things we do to protect the planet. Circularity is like one of those things, a powerful tool that helps us reach sustainability. 𝘌𝘹𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦: Sustainability is like building a strong, beautiful, and eco-friendly house. Circularity is like using recycled materials and energy-saving design to build that house. Sustainability is a strong concept and movement. It has a lot of tools - and circularity is only one of them. By embracing both circularity and sustainability, we can create a future where we thrive while protecting our planet. #Sustainability #sustainablefuture #Sustainabilitytrends #Sustainabilityawareness #NiimaarCircularDesign #SustainableDesign #Sustainableways #Circularity #Circulareconomy #Regenerativness

🌍 Why the Circular Economy Matters ♻️ Last weekend, while walking through my neighborhood, I saw something surprising: a big pile of perfectly usable items like vacuum cleaners and other household goods, all thrown out on the curb. It looked like people had just replaced their old stuff with new models and didn’t think twice about tossing the old ones. This made me reflect on how we handle our resources and waste. 🌟🛠️ It also got me thinking about the Circular Economy—a straightforward idea where we design products to be reused, repaired, or recycled, instead of just throwing them away. By making things that last longer and are easy to fix, we can cut down on waste and use our resources more wisely. 🌿🔄 Circularity is crucial for reducing waste and saving resources. It helps us rethink our habits and find ways to keep products in use for as long as possible. To make this happen, we need to design our objects with reparability in mind, so they can be easily fixed and reused! This isn’t just about being eco-friendly; it’s about making sure we use our resources wisely and lessen our impact on the planet. 🌍🚮 Seeing that pile of discarded items really highlighted how important it is to think about circular principles in our designs and everyday lives. So, how are you making sure your trash doesn’t just pile up? Share your tips for the circular economy—let’s make „being green” smart and fun! 💬♻️ #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #WasteReduction #Innovation #GreenLiving #SustainableDesign #FutureOfDesign

Sustainable Decisions – It’s All About the Numbers, Not Just Good Intentions We all like to think we’re being sustainable—installing solar panels, using recycled materials, or offering eco-friendly bags. But how much of that is backed by data-driven decisions? Well, is my recycled furniture truly more sustainable if it’s shipped from 750 km away, versus buying second-hand from just 10 km down the road? Are the eco-friendly bags I give to customers really making a significant impact, or would optimizing my delivery routes lead to a bigger reduction in emissions? And what about switching my company’s cars to electric—does that even make sense if we’re only driving 10,000 km a year? These are the kinds of questions we need to be asking. Sustainability isn’t just about feeling good; it’s about making decisions based on real numbers and measurable outcomes. Without data, we’re just guessing - and guessing doesn’t drive real change. As I always say: Let’s focus on the numbers to make better decisions. #Sustainability #DataDriven #Decisions #CarbonFootprint #MeasureImpact #GreenChoices #LifeCycleAssessment #SustainableFuture #ClimateAction #NumbersMatter

The SOL-ONE has a circular economy 3-star rating. Circularity aims to reduce environmental impact by maximizing the use of materials. It contrasts with the linear economy model of take, make, and dispose. In a circular economy, products are integrated into a value network for extended use. Depending on their characteristics, products can be reused, refurbished, upgraded, or recycled. BEKA Schréder prioritizes circular economy principles in product design, incorporating them from the outset and introducing a "circular lighting" label to signify products optimized for circularity based on 12 objective criteria. Imagine a world where your morning #CoffeeCup doesn’t end up in a landfill, where your car gets reborn into a bicycle, and your old phone transforms into a part of someone else’s new one. This is the essence of the #CircularEconomy, a simple yet groundbreaking idea that can be as familiar as your daily routine. 🌍 What is ‘circular economy’? In the simplest terms, the circular economy is about making the most of what we have. Instead of the pattern of ‘take-make-waste’, it is about ‘reduce-reuse-recycle’. It is a loop, much like the water cycle, where everything has its place and purpose. 🌍 Why does it matter? Every item we use takes #resources from the #planet! The circular economy helps us use these resources wisely and keep them in use for as long as possible. It is not just #recycling; it is preventing waste in the first place by designing products that can be fully reused or repurposed. 🌍 How does it work? It starts with #design. Products are created to last longer, to be repaired easily, or to be made into something new when they are no longer needed. It is about disrupting business models, changing the way they think, from selling a product to providing a service. For example, instead of selling light bulbs, a company might sell ‘lighting services’, ensuring that the materials are maintained and #recycled properly. 🌍 Taking action Principles of circular economy are not all new. Some of them have been in use for #decades. We need to #reintroduce them in the realm of business and our personal lives. By building products that are made to last and can be recycled, by supporting companies that take back their products for refurbishment and by thinking #creatively about how we can #reduce waste, we can all help to create a more #SustainableWorld. So next time you finish that cup of coffee, think about where it goes. With the circular economy, it could go on to live many more lives, just like the #water that flows from your tap to the clouds, and back again. It is a powerful concept, and it starts with our everyday choices. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #EllenMacArthurFoundation #Environment #Innovation #SustainableLiving

Last week, we discussed the pros and cons of being circular. We can all agree that the pros definitely outweigh the cons, so the most important question remains: How do we embrace circular economy? The circular economy is a revolutionary approach to production and consumption, aiming to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency. Lets take a closer look at the main strategies: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: We need to design products with durability, modularity, and ease of disassembly in mind. This allows for easier repair, upgrade, and reuse, extending the product's lifespan. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: The materials we use are crucial. Investing in safe, sustainable, recyclable, or biodegradable materials minimizes environmental impact and ensures resources can be used effectively. 𝟮. 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁-𝗮𝘀-𝗮-𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲: Shifting from ownership to leasing or renting products empowers manufacturers to take responsibility for the entire product lifecycle. This incentivizes them to create longer-lasting, repairable goods, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. 𝟯. 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆: 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Developing robust reverse logistics systems for product and material return is essential. This ensures that used products and materials are effectively collected and channeled back into the production cycle. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: We need to invest in infrastructure that allows for the efficient collection, sorting, and processing of used products. This enables us to recover valuable materials for reuse or recycling, minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. 𝟰. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆: Promoting platforms for sharing, swapping, or renting products helps to maximize their utility and lifespan. This reduces the need for new purchases, ultimately decreasing waste and promoting sustainable consumption patterns By implementing these strategies, we can move towards a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. Our circular approach consists mainly of points 1.1 & 1.2, always thinking of ways to become more sustainable. This is the way that Niimaar Circular Design thinks, works and therefore evolves! #Sustainability #sustainablefuture #Sustainabilitytrends #Sustainabilityawareness #NiimaarCircularDesign #SustainableDesign #Sustainableways #Circularity #Circulareconomy #Regenerativness
