Did you know the best way to understand a hurricane is to fly into or around it and release a dropsonde from an aircraft? 🌪️✈️ One of the most powerful tools in hurricane research is the Vaisala-manufactured NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research dropsonde. To gather critical measurement data, scientists aboard specialized aircraft and release these high-tech instruments into the storm, here’s how it's been done: ➡️ Dropsondes are dropped from an aircraft as it passes through the hurricane. ➡️ They collect key data such as pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed as they fall. ➡️ They're deployed throughout the storm—including the intense eyewall and the calm eye—helping scientists better understand the storm’s structure and behavior. We’re excited to work together with MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) to advance sustainable maritime transport. 🚢 🌬️ Vaisala supported MARIN in testing Canopée, the world’s first hybrid industrial cargo ship with Oceanwings® wingsails, to boost fuel efficiency and performance. Canopée was designed to carry rocket parts from Europe to French Guiana in 11 expected round trips per year. In the test, we equipped Canopée with our WindCube® Nacelle wind lidar and two WINDCAP® WMT700 ultrasonic wind sensors. These instruments provided accurate, undisturbed wind data, essential for optimizing wind-assisted propulsion. The collected wind data can be used to optimize Oceanwings performance, enabling significant fuel savings and emission reductions.
