Earlier this year Variety reported how Emma Thompson spoke in glowing terms of her experience shooting “The Fisherwoman” in Koli, Eastern Finland. The Finnish location had been chosen to stand in for Minnesota, after the changing climate in the US state meant that snow was scarce on the ground. Greeted by stunning winter scenery, the filming experience would leave the British acting legend profoundly moved. “Every day the director and I would look at the landscape and remind ourselves that this was more of a life-enriching experience than work.” Thompson also heaped praise on the locals. “All the Finns on our crew were admirable in different ways,” she said. “From the moment I landed, I was met with kindness and warmth, with deep hospitality and humour by people who made my stay in Koli feel more and more like home,” she added. Acclaimed Hollywood cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt embraced the challenges of filming ”What Remains” during Finland's dark season, capturing the unique blend of light, shadow and collaborative spirit that defines Finnish filmmaking. "I found the hierarchy is very blurred in the Finnish film sector – even regarding the actors. In Finland, the actors tend to hang out and eat together with the crew. And that really had an impact on me. I like to run a really collective, collaborative crew. And I quickly realized that Finns tend to consider everyone on the shoot to be valued. And that’s my favorite way to work."
