The #UK has an opportunity to demonstrate its global climate leadership by rapidly reducing #methane emissions. Yesterday, Clean Air Task Force convened a roundtable in the UK Parliament with Baroness Sheehan, Chair of the UK House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee. The roundtable brought together government, civil society, and industry representatives to discuss opportunities presented by the Committee’s #methane report, published in December: https://lnkd.in/esEYrEsb  We were joined by Kerry McCarthy MP, Minister for Climate at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and Professor Piers Forster, Interim Chair of the UK’s Climate Change Committee. Participants discussed how to advance methane policies in the energy and agriculture sectors and ensure the UK maintains its position as a global climate leader with a concrete plan for methane. Key points of the discussion included: ⏩ The UK has made progress reducing emissions from domestic oil and gas production, but more can be done, and new regulations will likely be needed to build on voluntary targets. 🌍 The potential for the UK to bolster its global leadership with a methane import standard – as its emissions footprint from energy imports dwarfs those from domestic production. 📊 The value of improved measurement and reporting - for both fossil fuel and agricultural methane – in building accountability and driving abatement finance. 🐄 The need for a clear roadmap so that farmers understand the actions they can take to tackle methane emissions, which include feed additives, selective breeding, manure management, and improvements in livestock health. CATF’s recently published briefing outlines potential opportunities to tackle agricultural methane in the UK: https://lnkd.in/gBVFxzEe 🔄 The need for closer cross-sector collaboration between stakeholders in both sectors, with the goal of developing mutually reinforcing policies, incentives and partnerships. CATF will continue to advocate for best practices and policies to #CutMethaneUK.

  • Nine countries in Latin American and Caribbean region—Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Trinadad and Tobago, Nicaragua—have signed the Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration at COP29. In their updated national climate plans, these countries are prioritizing Avoidance, Diversion, Valorization, and Infrastructure, along with accelerated dumpsite closures, enabling policies, capacity building (including via the LOW-Methane initiative), and innovative financing for sustainable organic waste management. In our upcoming webinar, we will explore how these strategies can strengthen methane ambition from the waste sector and drive impactful climate and clean air action. 🗓️ 25 Feb 🕘 09:00-10:30 (Panama time) Join webinar: https://lnkd.in/dnsbcp_X

  • In 2024, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) provided technical support to 30+ countries to develop roadmaps to reduce emissions of methane —a greenhouse gas with 80 times the warming power of CO₂! Six new roadmaps were finalized, adding to the 14 already published, boosting global efforts to meet the Global Methane Pledge of reducing emissions by 30% by 2030. But that’s not all! The Global Nitrous Oxide Assessment showed how cutting 40% of nitrous oxide emissions could save 20 million lives by 2050. Want to know more? National climate plans do more than cut emissions. They can help: ✅ Drive economic growth and create jobs ✅ Reduce pollution and improve public health ✅ Build climate-resilient infrastructure ✅ Expand access to affordable, clean energy ✅ Reduce reliance on fossil fuels Canada is the latest country to submit its new Nationally Determined Contribution (#NDC) – joining a growing list of countries that have submitted their new climate commitments in recent days, including Marshall Islands, Singapore, Zimbabwe, Ecuador, Saint Lucia and Andorra. Every new NDC matters – because climate plans are blueprints for stronger economies and societies. Read more on NDCs: https://bit.ly/4gSU8Eb #ParisAgreement

  • Since 2012, the Climate & Clean Air Coalition has been at the forefront of efforts to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)—potent climate pollutants that threaten our planet. Through relentless advocacy, partnerships, and strategic action, we played a critical role in securing the Kigali Amendment, a landmark global agreement to cut HFC emissions by at least 80% over the next 30 years. 🔹 Key Milestones in Our Journey: 📌 2012 – Launched HFC-alternative projects & funded 14 HFC inventories 📌 2015 – Ministers voiced strong support for amending the Montreal Protocol 📌 2016 – Cleared the path for an ambitious HFC phasedown at Kigali 📌 October 2016 – Nearly 200 countries agreed to the Kigali Amendment 📌 2017 – Urged fast ratification to accelerate climate action 📌 2019 – The Kigali Amendment officially came into force 💡 The impact? The fastest and most secure climate mitigation available in the near-term: ✅ Preventing up to 0.1°C of warming by 2050 ✅ Avoiding up to 0.4°C of warming by 2100 The fight against climate change requires bold leadership and global cooperation and partnerships. Together, we are making history and securing a cooler, more sustainable future. 💚🌍 This #ValentinesDay, let’s show some love to the planet we call home! 🌎💙
