🌱 [IMPROVE Project: Impact of alternative protein sources to improve nutrition] 🌍 On February 6–7, 2025, the kick-off meeting of the European-funded IMPROVE Project took place at the Hôtel de Ville in Reims and the European Center for Biotechnology and Bioeconomy in Pomacle. This event brought together 18 partner institutions from 13 EU countries to launch an ambitious initiative that will redefine the future of protein sources.   Coordinated by CentraleSupélec (Université Paris-Saclay) and led by Prof. Pedro Augusto, Vice Director of the #Chaire de Biotechnologie, IMPROVE aims to develop viable alternative protein sources derived from agri-food and fisheries by-products, fungi, bacteria, insects, and micro- and macroalgae. These proteins will be assessed from scientific, technical, environmental, economic, and societal perspectives, ensuring they meet the highest standards for nutrition, safety, and industrial scalability.   With €5.3M in Horizon Europe funding, IMPROVE will assess novel proteins to support the European Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy, reducing emissions, water use, and food waste while promoting renewable energy and a circular economy. Si l’éco-conception est aujourd’hui de plus en plus pratiquée (par exemple grâce à l’allongement de la durée de vie des produits, ou à l’utilisation de matériaux moins nocifs pour l’environnement), la dimension sociale nécessite d’être davantage intégrée au processus décisionnel afin de favoriser des systèmes plus soutenables. L’Analyse de Cycle de Vie Sociale (ACV Sociale), une méthode d’évaluation récemment formalisée dans la norme ISO 14075, permet d’identifier et d’évaluer les impacts sociaux et socio-économiques potentiels (tel que le travail des enfants, la santé et sécurité des utilisateurs, ou encore l’accès des communautés aux ressources locales) tout au long du cycle de vie des produits - de l’extraction de matières premières jusqu’à la fin de vie. Elle vise ainsi à éclairer les choix de conception, en comparant différentes alternatives. Mais comment évalue-t-on ces impacts sociaux ? Comment l’ACV Sociale peut-elle guider nos choix futurs ? 🗣️ Ghada Bouillass est Maître de conférences au Laboratoire Génie Industriel. Ses activités d’enseignement et de recherche s’inscrivent dans l’analyse de soutenabilité (ACV environnementale et sociale) et l’économie circulaire. Elle est également membre expert du comité « environnement et changement climatique » de l’AFNOR Certification et représente la France au sein du groupe de travail international de l’ISO sur la norme ISO 14075 sur l’Analyse Sociale de Cycle de Vie. This prestigious event aims to celebrate outstanding achievements in the field of energy economics, and pays tribute to the former chairman of EDF. Marcel Boiteux, who taught economics at CentraleSupélec, made a significant contribution to internationally recognized scientific work, embodying the French tradition of economic engineering. His pioneering work laid the foundations for the economics of the electricity sector, and for research into carbon taxe.
