I am pleased to serve as an Ambassador of Innovation at the CNRS sharing expertise to extend a researcher-innovator community. In the early steps of my academic researcher career, I initially believed that my work was scientific investigation and knowledge generation, not socio-economic impact. Remembering this motivates me to share my journey from Science to Innovation. After all, equivalent assumptions may be experienced by some academic colleagues. I hope that what I will share may be helpful to reconsider assumptions, reframe perceptions or bring mindfulness to some misbelieves. The perception of my role as a researcher changed gradually by working with a clinician gastroenterologist colleague genuinely interested in finding therapeutic solutions for unmet medical needs of his patients. This provided me with a compelling call to view science from a different perspective. Our collaborative research was not only a hypothesis to test: it turned out to be a quest for therapeutic solutions for his patients. A turning point came after the hypothesis validation step in clinically relevant models: the therapy of the first patient. Being at the hospital endoscopy room by the side of my clinician colleague treating the first patient was a transformative experience for me. It was both exciting and oppressive for me to realize that it was not the finish line, but rather the starting point. A difficulty ahead was to improve the therapeutic effect. However, the greatest challenge was to go beyond therapy to benefit a few patients. =>There we arrive at the limit of what can be done in academia. We understood that it would be necessary to transform the experimental solution into an economically viable product to attract the interest of a private entity for its development to benefit more and more patients in the future. This is what motivated me to co-found with colleagues and entrepreneurs 2 start-ups.
