📣 [NEW] Today, Wednesday, December 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) published the latest results in the fight against malaria. Despite notable progress since the early 2000s, with 2.2 billion cases and 12.7 million deaths averted since 2002, progress has stalled since 2015. But accelerated innovations offer hope. As we approach the next replenishment of the The Global Fund in 2025, and despite the political and financial challenges many countries are facing, we must roll up our sleeves and work together to support the Global Fund. - Italian below - [ITALY] 🌍 The impact of epidemics on European and global security🌍 In the lead-up to World AIDS Day on December 1, IAI - Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and Friends of the Global Fund Europe hosted a seminar last week addressing the growing link between public health and global security. Experts, policymakers, and institutional leaders explored how epidemics and pandemics remain pressing global threats requiring coordinated, multilateral action and sustainable funding. 💬 Pandemics are not just a health crisis but a direct threat to global economic, social, and political stability. Investing in global health is not an option; it is a strategic imperative to ensure a safer and more stable future for everyone" remarked Vice-Chair of Friends Europe STEFANO VELLA, MD. 🌍We are closer than ever to a future without HIV – our leaders must rise to the occasion On the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1st, 16 worldwide HIV experts gather in The Telegraph to emphasize the imperative need to end AIDS and to believe in a future without HIV. In 2023, 630,000 lives were claimed by AIDS, and 1.3 million people were newly infected with HIV, half of them were young women and girls. The figures speak for themselves: AIDS is not over. But there is hope, and an AIDS-free generation is achievable 💪 Key factors behind these advancements include: Global collaboration across scientists, communities, and political leaders. Biomedical advances, from PrEP to long-acting therapies like Lenacapavir. The Global Fund's model, centered on evidence, country ownership, inclusion, and community partnerships. Yet, we face a dual challenge: sustaining these gains for an HIV-free world and extending them equitably and universally. We must: ☑ Protect the rights and health of key and vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by stigma and violence. ☑ Close treatment gaps, especially for children and young women. ☑ Prioritize investments in health infrastructure, ensuring resilience against pandemics and chronic conditions. ☑ Accelerate research toward vaccines and a cure. 📣 As the Global Fund looks to its 2025 replenishment conference, political and financial investments in HIV must remain unwavering. The vision of a future without HIV is closer than ever - but only if we maintain momentum and focus. Political leaders must rise to the occasion. 🌍 40+ organizations call on the new European Commission to invest at least €200 billion in #ODA over the next #MFF to promote global stability, protect people and planet, and advance sustainable development. 🤝 A united EU leveraging its collective resources can make a bigger impact on global challenges than Member States acting alone. From climate action to humanitarian aid, an EU-led effort ensures greater reach, synergy, and influence. 💡 By scaling ODA to at least €200 billion, the EU can reinforce its credibility as a genuine international partner, promoting peace, stability, and equity worldwide. 📣 The Zero Malaria Experience has been launched today in London, with many crucial stakeholders and the long-term Zero Malaria ambassador David Beckham. This immersive experience shows how we can save lives and end malaria through innovation and funding, particularly through The Global Fund and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Together, we can reach #ZeroMalaria 💪
🆕 David Beckham and top malaria advocates have launched the Zero Malaria Experience to show how we can save lives and end malaria through innovation and funding. The interactive installation and film is the first time the historic fight to end malaria has been visualised in this unique way, using brand new research from Imperial College London. The brand new research shows that combining existing tools like mosquito nets with breakthroughs like new vaccines could save 13.2 million lives, including 10 million children under five, in the next 15 years. 🧬🔬🧑⚕️💊💉 Malaria is toughest on children, with one child dying every minute. We’re asking leaders around the world to show their full support for programs like Gavi and the Global Fund to ensure life-saving tools reach those who need them most – while continuing to invest in new malaria science. Malaria fights hard. We fight harder. Together, we can reach #ZeroMalaria.🌍🦟 #Teamwork makes the dream work, and we were lucky enough to have the incredible support of so many talented and committed partners on this campaign. We partnered with creative production and experiential entertainment studio The Mill to develop the Zero Malaria Experience, which was filmed at ZeroSpace in New York in partnership with 4Wall Entertainment. We’re also so grateful to Outernet London and their charity partner the ADOT FOUNDATION for supporting and hosting the ZMX event in London.

🌍 New WHO Global #Tuberculosis Report: Urgent Action and Investment Needed to Combat TB Despite decades of effort, tuberculosis (TB) remains the world's deadliest infectious disease. The 2024 World Health Organization Global Tuberculosis Report shows that in 2023 alone, 10.84 million people fell ill with TB - a 4.6% increase from 2020. Even more alarming, 2.7 million of these cases went undiagnosed and untreated. TB claimed 1.25 million lives, including 161,000 people living with #HIV. Key takeaways from the report: 🔹 Global Inequity: Eight countries carry two-thirds of the global TB burden, with poverty and marginalization driving cases. 🔹 Drug Resistance: Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) remains a public health threat, with only 44% of the 400,000 estimated MDR-TB cases receiving treatment in 2023. 🔹 Funding Gaps: Global TB programs received just USD5.7 billion in 2023 - far short of the USD22 billion target set at the UN High-Level Meeting on TB. The Global Fund provides 76% of all international TB financing, has invested approximately $10 billion in TB prevention and treatment since its establishment in 2002, and an additional $2 billion in TB/HIV programs. 📣 As the 2025 Global Fund Replenishment approaches, we have a critical opportunity to drive progress. By accelerating funding, we can work toward reducing TB deaths by 90% and incidence by 80% by 2030, changing the course of this global crisis.
