🇱🇧 hulo Strategic Workshop in Lebanon 🌍 Last week, hulo hosted a strategic workshop in Lebanon, bringing together 16 participating organisations for a day of discussions and reflection. The goal was to review last year's activities, identify needs, and co-develop a more effective approach for 2025. ✨ Recap of 2024 This workshop provided an opportunity to review 2024’s key actions, including Joint Procurement Initiatives, emergency response, and the European Union Humanitarian Air Bridge. A particular focus was placed on how hulo adapted to recent crises, addressing evolving humanitarian needs in Lebanon and the Middle East in general. ✍ Identifying and understanding needs To ensure our actions align with humanitarians’ evolving contexts, hulo conducted an interactive survey to gather the needs and expectations of participating organisations. ♻️ Environment & e-waste The growing issue of electronic waste (e-waste), particularly solar waste, was a key discussion point. While this poses significant environmental and health challenges, the focus has been on exploring collaborative solutions, given the absence of major recycling actors in the region. Discussions centred on identifying practical ways to address this gap collectively. 💚 Shared Resources: a marketplace for humanitarians Shared Resources, hulo’s upcoming app designed to optimise resource sharing among humanitarian organisations, was also a key part of the discussion. By creating a marketplace for humanitarian organisations to share resources, this tool will help strengthen collaboration and operational efficiency in the sector. 📊 Data & impact During this workshop, we highlighted the role of the Business Analytics and Research (BAR) Department in leveraging data-driven decision-making in humanitarian work. This session sparked discussions on the importance of improving data collection and use across local initiatives. 🧠 2025 work plan hulo’s Joint Procurement Toolkit, a set of tools and best practices to facilitate joint projects, was also discussed. Each group brainstormed upcoming challenges, shared their expectations for future initiatives, and identified the resources needed to maximise impact. 👣 Next steps To ensure an effective follow-up, hulo will compile the key takeaways and recommendations into a detailed report to be shared with all participants. A new survey will also be sent soon to further refine our approach based on participants’ feedback.   🙏 A huge thank you to all participants for your engagement! 🛫 Airbus Foundation Operation – Central African Republic 🛬   On February 6th, the Airbus Foundation and hulo coordinated a flight from Lyon, France to Bangui, Central African Republic. This is the fifth flight operation hulo has coordinated with the Airbus Foundation and the first in 2025.    ✈️ This flight aimed to help humanitarian organisations deliver live-saving supplies to communities in need and to improve their transparency and record-keeping.   🏥 💊 For its departure to Bangui, the flight carried 18.6 tonnes of medication and medical supplies on behalf of five humanitarian organisations.   📑 On the return trip to France, the same plane flew back with 8.9 tonnes of archives for five organisations. This allowed humanitarian organisations to collect and return documents that were previously kept in the field.   ✅ This was the first time hulo has retrieved archives as part of an operation. Repatriating archives helps humanitarian maintain a high level of transparency and compliance by ensuring the proper management of and access to key documents.   Thank you to Airbus Foundation for providing this flight to CAR. ☀️ Today is the International Day of Clean Energy 💡 As humanitarians seek to find new sources of renewable energy in the field, resource pooling can help operationalise their energy transition by reducing costs and identifying technical experts.   👉 In hulo's African countries of intervention, we launched a Joint Human Resources Initiative for renewable energy. Élysée Nguena Kemadji, Flying Electrician Specialist, was hired on behalf of the humanitarian organisations involved in this initiative and completed two operations in CAR and DRC:   🇨🇫 In CAR, the electrician worked in two phases, first with seven and subsequently twelve participating organisations, on projects related to electrical safety and a solar energy transition.   🇨🇩 In DRC, the electrician completed a mission with 6 participating organisations to assess electrical safety, awareness raising, and evaluations for solar power.   🔎 Many organisations are searching for better ways to generate energy, especially in regions lacking a stable network. This initiative helped organisations understand the necessary steps to support a transition to renewable energy generation, including the importance of feasibility evaluations and the lifecycle of solar panels.   ♻️ Solar panels provide a renewable alternative to gas-powered electric generators in the field, helping to address energy scarcity. However, the end-of-life recycling and disposal of panels and batteries remain a significant challenge, as effective solutions are still scarce or nonexistent. 📅 hulo's year in review ✅ As 2024 comes to a close, hulo reflects on how humanitarian organisations have progressed in finding innovative solutions for humanitarian logistics and aid. This year brought different opportunities and challenges to humanitarians around the world, along with new collaborative approaches to respond to unfolding emergencies. Over this past year, hulo's humanitarian community reached the following milestones: 🌍 2 new countries of intervention: Colombia and Chad. 💛 14 hulo member organisations. 🤝 105 participating organisations involved in at least one Joint Initiative. 📃 42 Joint Initiatives completed, in progress, or ongoing. EU Humanitarian Air Bridge flights coordinated by hulo also resulted in: ✈️ 70 flights to seven destination countries. ➡️ 40 organisations participating, including humanitarian organisations, UN Agencies, and EU Member States. 📦 2,325 tonnes and 10,343 cubic metres of humanitarian cargo delivered.
