  • Great to see this insightful piece by ICKR's Todd Davey, Dominic Spada, and Medisa Focic getting well deserved recognition! Their article, "Beyond licensing and spin-outs: A new agenda for university engagement", highlights the evolving role of universities in fostering innovation beyond traditional tech transfer. The discussion around broader knowledge transfer, across disciplines and with industry, government, and society, is particularly relevant as institutions rethink their impact. It's exciting to see these ideas resonate with ongoing initiatives like those at UCT Research Contracts & Innovation! Check out the full Insights Brief for more!

    Senior Manager: Innovation

I found the UIIN February article "Beyond licensing and spin-outs: A new agenda for university engagement" really excellent - well written Todd Davey, Dominic Spada and Medisa Focic! One can download the Insights Brief via the newsletter - a worthwhile read. This is exactly the space that the team at UCT Research Contracts & Innovation is trying to support more at University of Cape Town. There have been some exciting developments recently with industry partners posing problems and RC&I helping to find researchers who can provide solutions/expertise within the university. New research areas have been created and in the one case included the industry partner providing specialist test equipment for use in our labs. This will develop local expertise to understand the behaviour of the technology in the South African environment, helping the company roll out their innovative product and cementing ongoing collaboration. Rewarding to see the puzzle pieces falling into place. The first recommendation in their Insights Brief points towards going beyond the STEM disciplines and looking more holistically at knowledge transfer, innovation and social development. This really speaks to the considerable potential that we are seeing in SHAPE innovation (Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts for People and the Economy) especially through a British Council funded project that we ran last year in collaboration with UWC TTO and Oxentia. I liked the third recommendation too - to go beyond engagement with industry to widen the scope to governmental and societal actors. The TTOs in the Western Cape are actively engaging with Western Cape Government Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) on a regular basis. Great to have Angela Abbott at our Regional TTO Forum this week. #universityimpact #beyondpatents #universityindustryengagement #SHAPE
