The world's most informed and accomplished expert on the wines of Bordeaux
À propos
A site that is dedicated to Bordeaux -– one of the world’s greatest wine regions and the centre of so much of the global wine trade – is long overdue. My aim is for subscribers to have access to regular reports on Bordeaux wines, and all wines that go through the Place de Bordeaux – from Opus One to Inglenook to Cloudburst and more. These will take the form of En Primeur reports, in Bottle reports, Ten Years On tastings, Beyond Bordeaux reports, plus individual chateaux verticals and profiles, together with podcast and video content, and regular real world events.

There have always been certain slices of Bordeaux that have risen above all argument about terroir. The sticky blue clays – or pelosols – of Petrus are perhaps the most famous example, or the sight of Château Ausone perched on the edge of the calcaire à asteries limestone plateau that greets anyone walking into the centre of St Emilion. The deep gravels of Latour are also hard to argue with, producing some of the most long-living and glorious wines in the world. And yet terroir is often missing from the conversation about this region. This week, for #newcontentthursday, we ask why. It’s a pretty intense deep dive, by way of the Romans, through Eleanor d’Aquitaine, the draining of the Médoc marshes, the 1855 classification and the innovations of today... offering a fascinating look at terroir through history, with a few suggestions for exactly why the soils of Bordeaux slipped out of the conversation, and why they should be welcomed back. Come join us for a leisurely read over the holidays. #bordeauxterroir #insidebordeaux #newcontentthursdays #academieinternationaleduvin

Very much looking forward to joining the Women in Wine LDN for this event early next year. Repost from their account, and thank you for such kind words, as follows; We are delighted to announce that our next event will be a conversation and tutored tasting with the Queen of Bordeaux, Jane Anson! Jane will be joining us to discuss her latest project - the release of 3 beautiful maps, each showing the varied soils and topography of Bordeaux. Swipe to see the maps in a bit more detail, along with a WIWL promocode. They'd make the perfect Christmas gift (even for yourself) so get your orders in quick! Jane's formidable reputation in the industry shows that dedication to the detail can reap huge rewards for a career in wine. We'll be asking Jane about her decades long career, the changing role of a wine critic, and what the future looks like for Bordeaux - as well as asking her some of your burning questions too. Tickets will go quick for this, become a member through the link in bio for priority notice (via email) when tickets are released. Thanks to Bibendum Wine for supporting this event. #womeninwineldn #winemapping #winemaps #community #winegroups #insidebordeaux #wineevents

Each one of our Top 50 Wines of the Year 2024 can be opened and shared right now. Narrowing things down further to one overall Wine of the Year was tough, and I hesitated particularly over selecting the wines from my 2009 and 2010 report that was easily one of the highlights of my tasting year. In the end, I decided to choose from the stunning 2005 vintage that is starting to fully flourish at 20 years old – and as 2025 marks its two decade point, it’s a great reminder that the best vintages in Bordeaux often require patience. And the wine chosen from the 2005 vintage, as overall wine of the year? Domaine de Chevalier 2005, a bottle that is full of joy. Combine the brilliant vintage with the winemaking team of Chevalier – owner Olivier Bernard, sons Hugo and Adrien, and longtime director Rémi Edange – and you have everything in place for pure magic. This 2005 got 97 points on my most recent tasting. Succulent, moreish, cassis, gunsmoke, crayon, graphite, liquorice, black cherry, cassis, crushed mint, it more than deserves its loyal following. All top 50 wines are on the site now - a subscription would make a wonderful Christmas gift.
