Preserving the Legacy of Latécoère and Aéropostale: Inspiring Future Generations to Soar

À propos

The Latécoère Foundation, established in 2004 by Marie-Vincente Latécoère, is a Swiss public-interest foundation dedicated to preserving the memory of aviation and its pioneers. Led by Pierre-Elzéar Latécoère since 2021, the foundation seeks to inspire future generations by promoting the values of Pierre-Georges Latécoère. The foundation manages and conserves the complete Latécoère archives, dating back to the 1920s, which include models, plans, manuals, photographs, and travel logs of Latécoère aircraft, as well as personal items of PG Latécoère, such as the globe on which he charted his air routes. The archives, which have been partly digitized, are available to historians, artists, and creators for projects, exhibitions, and publications. The Latécoère Foundation supports a range of cultural, educational, and innovation projects, including: • Museums like L’Envol des Pionniers in Toulouse, which narrates the story of Latécoère Airlines and Aéropostale, and the Biscarrosse Seaplane Museum. • Reconstruction of the Latécoère 28, with a flying version being built and a static version created through an international educational project. • Historical and solidarity air rallies retracing the routes of early aviators while delivering aid and fostering cultural exchanges. • Virtual modeling of the Latécoère 631 in Microsoft Flight Simulator, allowing enthusiasts to experience realistic simulations. • Innovations like the Mermoz Challenge, where hydrogen-powered drones are developed to cross the South Atlantic, honoring Jean Mermoz’s achievements while focusing on sustainable aviation. The foundation also organizes events such as its annual General Assembly, Latécoère Explorers’ meetings, conferences, museum visits, and charity events, fostering a strong community of aviation enthusiasts and innovators. The Latécoère Foundation seeks to bridge the past and future of aviation, ensuring that the pioneering spirit continues to inspire tomorrow’s aeronautical achievements.

  • The 2024 Latécoère Africa Raid kicked off with a vibrant evening event in Muret, where children engaged in inspiring discussions about the history of Latécoère and Aéropostale airlines, marked by symbolic letters and diplomas. From there, adventurers took to the skies for an exhilarating 9,000 km journey across France, Morocco, and Senegal. With 50 hours of flight time, pilots soared over breathtaking landscapes, from the rugged French coastline to the vast Moroccan deserts, making stops at iconic locations such as Biscarrosse, Casablanca, and Saint-Louis in Senegal. As always, the raid blended adventure with a deep humanitarian mission. Along the way, pilots distributed school supplies, books, and soccer balls to children in the African stages, igniting joy and hope in the communities they visited. In Casablanca, 60 wide-eyed students gathered to meet the pilots, sharing in lively discussions about the wonders of aviation and the legendary Latécoère and Aéropostale airlines. The thrill peaked in Saint-Louis, Senegal, where the group inaugurated a memorial honoring Pierre-Georges Latécoère and visited an orphanage, bringing not only essential supplies but also unforgettable experiences—36 children were given the chance to fulfill their dreams of flying over the city. The raid wasn’t just about giving back; it was also about the thrill of exploration. From the lush forests of France to the sun-scorched deserts of Morocco and the shimmering coasts of Senegal, each leg of the journey was filled with awe. The return voyage began from the edge of the Sahara in Dakhla, offering pilots a stunning final view of the Moroccan coastline. The adventure continued through Tan Tan, Tangier, and Mutxamel in Spain before the final landing in Lézignan Corbières, France. This edition of the Latécoère Raid once again captured the spirit of adventure, blending daring aviation with a mission of connecting people and cultures, while spreading knowledge and humanitarian aid along the way.

✨ September is a milestone month in Latecoere’s history, marking the beginning of our journey in #aerospace innovation. In September 1917, visionary entrepreneur Pierre-Georges Latécoère broke ground on the construction of his first aircraft factory in Toulouse-Montaudran. A few months later, hundreds of Salmson 2 reconnaissance aircraft rolled out of this industrial site.   This bold step not only launched Latecoere’s century-long legacy of excellence but also played a pivotal role in establishing #Toulouse as the capital of the French aeronautics industry. This achievement was made possible by the dedication, passion, and expertise of the women and men who brought Latécoère’s vision to life, transforming an ambitious goal into reality and shaping the future of #aviation.   As we celebrate 107 years of innovation, we honor all the #pioneers who have contributed to this extraordinary journey and continue to propel Latecoere into the future. ✈️🌍   #NeverStopPioneering Photos: Latécoère Foundation / www.latecoere.com

  • Unveiling of the Little Prince Statue in Alghero: Commemorating 80 Years Since Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's Visit to Sardinia. On July 18, 1944, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry departed from Sardinia in his military aircraft. Thirteen days later, his plane was shot down. Now, 80 years later, the Little Prince returns to Alghero! A stunning sculpture by Mario Nieddu, titled "L'Incontro" (The Meeting), captures the beloved character and the fox reaching out to Saint-Exupéry. This installation was inaugurated on July 18, 2024, marking the anniversary of Saint-Exupéry’s final departure from Italy. In Alghero, where he is honored in a museum in Porto Conte, Saint-Exupéry spent his last summer finishing "Citadel" and "Letter to an American." Since May 1944, he conducted reconnaissance missions over southern France from the American military base in Fertilia. His time in Alghero was joyously captured in photographs by John Phillips for "Life" magazine, now displayed at the M.A.S.E. in Porto Conte. These images, along with rare editions and documents, are compiled by Massimiliano Fois in "Pizzicaluna a l'Alguer. Antoine De Saint-Exupéry in Alghero." Saint-Exupéry began his pilot career with Latécoère in 1926, flying from Toulouse to Casablanca and later to Dakar. In 1927, he became the station manager at Cap Juby, a key stop between Casablanca and Dakar. By 1932, he was a test pilot for Latécoère’s planes and seaplanes. His travels inspired books like "Southern Mail" (1929), "Night Flight" (1931), and "Wind, Sand and Stars" (1939). His adventures as a pilot also inspired "The Little Prince" (1943), the world's best-selling and most translated book after the Bible. The inauguration was graced by the presence of Pierre-Elzéar Latécoère, president of the Latécoère Foundation, and Jean-Marc Probst, president of the "Petit Prince Collection" Foundation and the world’s largest collector of Little Prince books. Probst’s collection boasts 586 translations, including the new Algherese version, "Lo Petit Príncip" Participating in the event were also Raimondo Tilloca, President of the Porto Conte Park; Massimiliano Fois, the artistic director of MASE; Raffaella Paola Sanna, the Culture Councillor of the Municipality of Alghero; and Neria De Giovanni, President of the Alghero Foundation. Mario Nieddu explained that the transparent figure of Saint-Exupéry in his work symbolizes the famous quote: "One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye." • Exactly one year ago, an exceptional project was unveiled: the rebirth of an aeronautical legend thanks to the modelling of the Latécoère 631 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. We are thrilled to guide you through the passenger cabin and cockpit of this 1940s transatlantic seaplane. The passenger layout of the Latécoère 631 reflects the luxury and comfort sought for long transatlantic flights. The spacious interior is divided into several lounges designed for maximum comfort and relaxation. The large, plush seats are arranged in groups to encourage socializing. Large windows provide stunning ocean views, while thick curtains ensure privacy and sun protection. Private cabins are available for those needing rest or work in peace. The onboard service includes gourmet meals in a dedicated dining room and a bar for enjoying drinks. The decor features elegant materials like polished wood and leather, creating a refined and luxurious atmosphere akin to the grand ocean liners of the time. The cockpit of the Latécoère 631 is a technologically complex space where navigation and piloting equipment are central. The cockpit, located at the front, features large panoramic windows offering an unobstructed view, essential for navigation. The pilots' seats are surrounded by a crowded dashboard of analog instruments, levers, and various dials to monitor and control the six engines. A sophisticated radio system ensures communication with ground stations and other aircraft. The cockpit also includes stations for the navigator and flight engineer, each with their own set of maps, compasses, and measuring instruments. This extensive graphic design project was executed by the talented Jimmy Battut from BlueMesh. It also entailed significant historical research in the archives of the Latécoère Foundation, where plans, photos, manuals, and technical data were meticulously examined to recreate the aircraft as it was eighty years ago. A heartfelt thank you and congratulations to Jimmy, Microsoft, and all the members of the Latécoère Foundation who helped bring this magnificent project to life.
