Feeding the future.

À propos

The world’s population is estimated to reach more than nine billion by 2050. Global food production will have to increase by 70 per cent to feed everyone. Meanwhile one third of all food produced is wasted. At nextProtein we’re driven by a personal desire to address land and resource scarcity and feed a rising population sustainably. nextProtein can produce the equivalent amount of protein from 100sqm as 100ha of soya field. Founded by couple Syrine Chaalala and Mohamed Gastli, we produce insect-based protein for animal feedstocks with a negligible carbon footprint, at a lower cost and with the equivalent nutritional value of traditional protein production. We do this by taking otherwise unconsumed food on which to raise the insects, returning protein to the food cycle. nextProtein has years of experience in breeding Black Soldier Fly, which was selected specially for its beneficial, high-yield quality. Fly larvae are raised, harvested and then processed into valuable components of animal feed: an insect based protein for aquaculture, livestock and pets, an extracted fat and a natural fertilizer for use in agriculture. Our process is EU-approved for aquaculture and pet food and is suitable for feedstocks for the poultry and pork industries.   Based in France with production operations in Tunisia, nextProtein is also backed by a range of high-profile international investors and business angels who have recognised our potential to revolutionise the industry.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻!   In the world’s difficult context, nextProtein managed to make 𝟸̲𝟶̲𝟸̲𝟺̲ ̲𝚊̲ ̲𝚢̲𝚎̲𝚊̲𝚛̲ ̲𝚘̲𝚏̲ ̲𝚒̲𝚖̲𝚙̲𝚘̲𝚛̲𝚝̲𝚊̲𝚗̲𝚝̲ ̲𝚖̲𝚒̲𝚕̲𝚎̲𝚜̲𝚝̲𝚘̲𝚗̲𝚎̲𝚜̲, enabling us to move forward as one of the leading and most competitive insect producers in the world.   𝘓𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯!   Early 2024 we set out to achieve objectives that would allow us to reduce cost, maintain product quality and stability, all while preparing the 2025 ramp up.   In our industry, being able to feed and grow our insects on EU authorised food waste is key to being cost effective and being an important participant in the circular economy, in addition to reducing energy (-𝟭𝟯% 𝗠𝗪𝗵/𝗧 of nextMeal) and water use. In 2024, we were able to 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟯𝟬% (by 40% in the growing phase) and integrate more than 10 additional families of ingredients. We further improved our larvae feed recipe and optimised our 𝗙𝗖𝗥 (Food Conversion Ratio, which means nutrient use is optimised during digestion) by 𝟭𝟱% and reduce our sourcing price ratio. nextProtein has developed new recipes that are designed to meet the needs of BSF, while diversifying its sourcing to include new categories of wastes from the food industry. This not only means that producing our ingredients makes them the most price competitive out there, but it also means that we are able to convert and reintegrate food waste into the food value chain! 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻’𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 and 2024 proved to be an important year with significant improvements on this front ! 🌍🌱 Mapping the Future of Sustainable Agriculture in Europe! 🌱👇   Team Wind is excited to share our mapping of European startups that are driving positive change in sustainable agriculture.   💡Agriculture is not just water and chemical-intensive - it’s also a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions of which notably Nitrous Oxide (N₂O):, Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) and Methane (NH₃) ❗️Agriculture therefore contributes 10-12% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When including land-use change (like deforestation for agriculture), the total agricultural footprint rises to about 23% according to sources like FAO and IPCC. 🌍 The sector faces immense challenges, from reducing its carbon footprint to improving water efficiency and minimizing harmful chemicals. Innovation and new technologies play a key role in the journey towards reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.   In this mapping, we are highlighting the key startups that are revolutionizing agriculture by addressing the challenges of food security, soil health, climate adaptation, and innovation in the agriculture sector to make it more efficient. 🍃🌱   By looking to support these visionary #startups, we aim to help drive real change in the agriculture sector and contribute to a future where food production is more sustainable, resilient and healthy for generations to come. 🍃🚜 📣 🙏 A shout out to Hectar for helping us review the mapping and to the #AgriTech associations that are helping to push the needle forwards (...or should we say plough?! 😉) by connecting agricultre and innovation La Ferme Digitale, InnovAgri, FranceAgriMer 🙏 ... And kudos to our super analyst Thibaud Déchaud for his great work on the mapping 🙌 Cc: Thibaud Déchaud, Thierry Vandewalle, Xavier Gury, Aurélie NICOLAS, Olivier Mougenot, Helen O'Reilly - Durand, Perrine Blanc, Justine Biscay
