NUWARD participated to the roundtable discussing the role of technological neutrality, including new nuclear power, in Italy’s journey towards decarbonization, energy security, and competitiveness. This insightful event was part of the Italy-France Forum 2024, organized by IREFI at Edison’s headquarters in Rome. 🌐 The significance of nuclear power was underscored during COP28, where 22 countries pledged to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050 📈 to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. ✅ Europe has recognized nuclear energy as a key low-carbon source, fostering investments and advancements in this sector, particularly in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). A strategic report by TEHA Group, in collaboration with Edison and Ansaldo Nucleare, mentions that nuclear power currently contributes 22% of the EU’s electricity generation. Looking ahead, Italy’s electricty consumption is projected to reach 520 TWh by 2050 📈, almost two times today’s consumption, with data centers alone expected to demand 3.8 TWh. The Italian government plans to restart Italy’s nuclear energy programme by introducing legislation to support investment in small modular reactors to achieve Net Zero by 2050 🌍. "The development of new nuclear power at the European level could unlock a potential market of over €20 billion for Italian companies. If Italy were to implement a new nuclear development program, it could unlock an additional potential market estimated at around €25 billion for Italian companies by 2050. And enabling approximately 39,000 direct jobs and over 78,000 new indirect and induced jobs." (TEHA Group, Edison and Ansaldo Nucleare's strategic report). In March 2023, EDF, Edison, Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare signed a Letter of Intent to advance nuclear power development in Europe, specifically in the field of SMRs. This initiative was followed in July 2024 by a Memorandum of Understanding signed by EDF, Edison, Ansaldo Energia, Ansaldo Nucleare and Federacciai, aimed at enhancing the growth of Italian nuclear energy, particularly through the NUWARD's SMR, to support the decarbonzation of the Italian steel industry. Together, we can harness the power of nuclear energy to build a sustainable future for Italy and beyond! 🇮🇹 IREFI - Institut pour les Relations Economiques France-Italie Edison Renaud Crassous Sandro Baldi Framatome The European House-Ambrosetti
