Thanksgiving There is no better gift on Thanksgiving than a soulmate ringing the bell the day before after months of fighting!!! Our children and I will be by her side as she rings that bell tomorrow! Late at night over recent weeks, I have had a little project. I have been assembling the 100s of stories that I have written over years in two albums - one for each of my children. Perhaps one day, a descendent will discover the books and read a couple of stories. Nearing completion, I have noticed something. The deepest writings… the greatest soul searching moments….. came in the midst of my hardest moments. Heck, the beginning of my open sharing began during one of the hardest chapters in my life. It was if the true essence of life was revealing itself during these times. Simultaneously, I met 1000s of folks from around the world who openly shared their incredible stories with me. So special! On Thanksgiving Day after a wonderful time of celebrating together, I will end the day with a little walk to reflect on the tailwinds and the headwinds of the last year. Brings me to a key point of leadership. You know, I love life. I love celebrating all aspects of life. I have noticed how quickly I historically forgot the storms when the storm clouds disappeared. Sometimes, it seemed that aspects of SELF came back into the equation when the tailwinds blew strong. I never liked this about me. Think about the great coaches. It seemed they fought the hardest when times were really good. They celebrated the wins. They just never lost sight of the essence of what propelled them. The great coaches praised those who, after a big win, stuck around after practice to run another set of sprints… who ran to the film room to watch another reel on their upcoming opponent or to review the mistakes they made in the big win! These moments ultimately defined them because this discipline/approach was at the core of their souls. The great moments were great. They just clung to the things that made the great moments. Please, don’t get me wrong here. I will have a ton of fun with family. Though I share deeper moments in my writings, I don’t dwell in the depth of them 24/7. I just cling to the more than any other time in my life. The key is that I now ALWAYS push myself to remember and reflect! The hard times make the great times even brighter. How we live in the hard times AND the great times… well, that defines the impact of our journey in many ways. So, on this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for all times, all winds, all chapters. Lastly, I will begin where I ended. Assembling all these stories in two books for my children... well, the process has brought peace to me. There is a special feeling in knowing that a future descendent might discover them one day during a headwind in their journey and find some perspective that might be helpful.
