One of the questions I got asked a lot last year - spoiler alert there is a whole blog article coming soon on this - is this: Do I think the Modern Data Stack is dead? 🪦 There are a few ways to look at this and my answer simply depends on who is asking. Global spending on “Modern” data & analytics solutions topped $270bn last year, Snowflake is still growing at +30% YoY (after 69% in FY24) and Databricks just raised the biggest round in the history of data infrastructure. So no, as an industry it is far from dead. Data has become a transactional product, looking at the data monetization market alone $3.24bn in 2023 projected to reach $15.84bn 2031 (21.95% CAGR). This is the result of the revamp of the analytics workflow that took place over the past decade aka The Modern Data Stack. So as a technology concept, it is actually just taking off. So what is dead about the MDS? The hype. Or some of, it and especially compared to AI. which is not a bad thing. The MDS is now a mature industry with several specialised and well integrated technologies with plenty of room for innovation and disruption (Look at Data Observability). So maybe the hype is dead, but the state of enterprise adoption, product innovation, and future potential suggests that the underlying value and impact remain as strong as ever. #moderndatastack #sql #analytics #dataobservability
