  • Vienna Is The Most Livable City in 2024 🏙️ Credits to Visual Capitalist. Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ What We're Showing : The 10 most livable cities in the world, as ranked by The Economist. Every year, The Economist ranks cities on over 30 factors across five categories to determine their overall livability. Factors included: Stability: Prevalence of crime, terror, military conflict, civil unrest/conflict Healthcare: Availability and quality of private and public healthcare, general healthcare indicators Culture and environment: Humidity/temperature rating, cultural and sporting availability, social or religious restrictions Education: Availability and quality of private education, public education indicators Infrastructure: Quality of road network, public transport, international links, availability of good housing Key Takeaways : Vienna has held the title of The Economist's most livable city for three consecutive years. This year, it scored a perfect 100 across four of the five categories, and scored 93.5 in culture and environment. Overall, Western Europe is the most livable region, coming first in four categories, while second-placed North America is best for education. Alongside Vienna, three other western European cities: Copenhagen, Zurich, and Geneva also made the top 10. Housing crises has lowered the infrastructure scores of some of the top-ranked cities. Melbourne, Sydney, and Vancouver have fell down in rankings compared to 2023, but remain in the top 10 list, while Toronto dropped off the list. • Global Hydrogen Production by Region in 2023 Credits to Visual Capitalist . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ What We're Showing The total kilotonnes of hydrogen produced by each region in 2023, broken down by blue and green hydrogen. Figures come from the Energy Institute's 2024 Statistical Review of World Energy and are updated as of June 2024. Blue vs. Green Hydrogen Blue hydrogen production involves generating hydrogen from natural gas and steam, and using carbon capture to capture the resulting carbon emissions. Green hydrogen production uses renewable energy to power electrolysis, a process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, resulting in no carbon emissions. Blue Hydrogen Dominates Production Blue hydrogen production is currently much more prevalent than green hydrogen because it leverages existing natural gas infrastructure, making it easier and more cost-effective to produce compared to green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is expensive primarily due to the high costs of renewable energy needed for electrolysis and the current inefficiencies in the technology. Additionally, the electrolysis process itself is energy-intensive, contributing to overall costs. Data sources https://lnkd.in/eg6SqbcZ __________ ♻️ Find this post useful? • August 2024 has seen a surge in wildfires worldwide, mainly in Africa Credits to Our World in Data . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ The chart shows the weekly area burned by wildfires globally and in Africa from 2012 to 2024. This August saw an abrupt increase in the area burned by wildfires, with most of this rise coming in a single week. This global weekly burn rate was 64% higher than any previous week during this period. This data comes from the Global Wildfire Information System. This dramatic rise was mostly driven by severe wildfires in Africa, where approximately 22 million hectares burned in a week, accounting for around 80% of the global burned area. Two countries have been particularly hard-hit — Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo — where 6% and 2.5% of the total land area have burned in just one week. • Progress on Reducing Global Hunger has Stagnated Credits to Our World in Data . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ The world has made much progress in reducing global hunger over the last 50 years. Despite fast population growth, the amount of food produced per person has continued to increase. Rates of hunger — defined as not having enough calories to sustain a healthy and productive life — were estimated to be as high as 1 in 3 people in developing countries in 1970. Since then, rates have fallen substantially. However, as you can see on the chart, this progress has stalled over the last few years. In some regions, it has even reversed. In 2017, 7.6% of the world did not get enough calories. By 2022, this had risen to 9.2%. Conflict, extreme weather, and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have all contributed to this reversal. • Visualizing the Top Sectors for Battery Investment Credits to Elements . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ What We’re Showing The total capital expenditure (Capex) requirements to build up capacity to meet future battery demand by 2030, and 2040. This data comes exclusively from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence as of July 2024. Demand projections are based on 2023 demand versus forecasted demand. Key Takeaways  The total Capex necessary in the battery tech sector is projected to increase from $567 billion in 2030 to $1.6 trillion in 2040. At the extraction stage (upstream), investments are expected to concentrate mostly on lithium, recycling, and nickel. Among battery components, the cathode (the part of a battery that typically stores the positive charge during discharge) is expected to receive the majority of the investment. Copper demand for battery cells is expected to increase fivefold by 2040. Demand for recycled materials is forecasted to increase 26 times by 2040. Battery demand is projected to increase ninefold by 2040. __________ ♻️ Find this post useful? • The Places With the Most Marine Protected Areas Credits to Statista . Follow Them for more valuable insights. Original post: __________ Worldwide, some 30 million square kilometers of coastal waters were listed as marine protected areas in 2023, representing 8.2 percent of the surface area of oceans and seas, according to a study recently reported by Le Monde. However, this figure was still far short of the international community's target of protecting 30 percent of the oceans by 2030 to restore biodiversity. The study also concluded that only a third (36 percent) of these marine areas were under high or full protection and would be truly effective. In addition, the authors noted that many countries (including Brazil, the UK, France, South Africa, Australia and the USA) were establishing a significant proportion of these protected areas in remote areas or overseas territories. As this chart, based on World Bank data shows, France and its overseas territories are among those with the highest share of protected territorial marine waters: 96 percent in New Caledonia and Saint-Martin (French West Indies) in 2022, and almost 50 percent overall for France (metropolitan France and overseas territories). France was thus just ahead of Germany and Australia, where the proportion of protected territorial marine waters was between 44 percent and 46 percent that year. With the exception of the micro-states of Palau and Monaco (100 percent or close to 100 percent), only Kazakhstan, which protected just over half of its coastal waters in the Aral Sea, came out ahead. Worldwide, 18 percent of territorial waters (over which the sovereignty of coastal states is exercised) were protected. World Bank statistics do not, however, detail the proportion of these marine areas under high or full protection.
