The 5G Strategic Deployment Agenda (5G SDA) sets a bold clear vision for the future of rail. More than just better connectivity, the 5G SDA highlights how rail can lead in Europe’s green and digital transitions, enhancing operational excellence as well as passenger connectivity services. This vision aligns perfectly with UIC’s mission to innovate and ensure rail remains the backbone of sustainable mobility. As part of this transformation, the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) plays a pivotal role in ensuring continuity for the GSM-R obsolescence, and, even more important, enabling the railways digitalization and connectivity of the rail sector. UIC is proud to contribute to this effort, working alongside key partners to ensure the connected and resilient rail network of the future. #Innovation #DigitalTransformation #Rail #5G #Sustainability #FRMCS #UICrail

🚆 ODYSSEUS Train Pilot first implementation phase begins in Romania 🌟 This week marked an exciting new chapter for the ODYSSEUS project and its railway-related activities with the official start of the first implementation phase of the pilot tests. Several innovative technologies developed through the project have been tested in a railway operational environment in Ungheni at the border crossing point between Romania, 🇷🇴 and Moldova 🇲🇩: 🛫 UAV-assisted person detection with thermal and high-resolution cameras 🛂 Digital and virtual passport integration 🤖 AI-powered continuous behavioural authentication 🧠 Multi-modal fusion decision support system As railway pilot task leader, the UIC Security Department, represented by Grigore Havarneanu and Kacper Kubrak, was directly involved in the event planning and co-organization. The tests were conducted under real-life conditions through several scenarios which allowed the Romanian Border Police to test the proposed solutions. This marks significant progress for the project, and the outcomes of this phase are highly anticipated. The ODYSSEUS solutions will now undergo evaluation against performance metrics and KPIs to measure their impact on rail border crossing checks. Find more here: https://lnkd.in/eYm8uqz2

🚆 Railways bring Climate Action back on track! 🌍 SDG 13.1 calls to “strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries” (United Nations). Climate adaptation is critical to railways so passengers and goods can be protected from the consequences of climate hazards.🌡️💨 📜See more in UIC’s Future Proof Railways report: https://lnkd.in/eKYVSrmB UIC’s Statistics show that: 7️⃣7️⃣% of reporting companies have board-level oversight on climate-related issues. 5️⃣7️⃣% had emission targets in 2022. 7️⃣3️⃣% collaborate with their government on policy solutions to scale up climate action. 6️⃣6️⃣% engage in public-private partnerships or other initiatives on climate-related issues. ⚠️And don’t forget: By carrying 7% of passengers and 8% of freight at only 1.2% of transport emissions, railways continue to be the most carbon-efficient mode of mass transportation (International Energy Agency (IEA)). Let’s push for #MoreTrains as a climate solution and take action to shift passengers and goods to railways! 📣 The closing meeting of the #safetyculture peer review of the Technicentre de Nevers was held last Friday, 13 December, with the management team. Fruitful discussions took place on how to continuously improve the safety culture within an organisation by building on their strengths and identifying areas for improvements. 🙌 The UIC would like to thank the Technicentre Industriel Nevers-Languedoc - SNCF Voyageurs Matériel for its warm welcome, and in particular Catherine Lopez, who worked on organising the peer review. It was a great experience to be alongside the operators and their managers, and to discover their expertise and know-how to understand better how safety "lives" in this heavy maintenance depot. 🙏 The UIC also extends its warmest thanks to CFL cargo, and in particular Paul Hodgson, who did an excellent job in leading the safety culture peer reviewer team. Thanks also to the European team of Alessia Rao (Trenitalia), Bernard Penners (Infrabel), Pascal Duflos (Trenitalia France), Guillaume Foeillet, PMP (Groupe SNCF) and Alexandre ROBERTSON-MACKAY (DB Cargo France) for their hard work and involvement throughout the week. 🌍 UIC’s 105th General Assembly: Shaping the Future of Rail 🌍 The 105th UIC General Assembly convened today in Paris, bringing together global railway leaders to address the future of the rail sector. Discussions highlighted innovation, sustainability, regional development, and standardisation as essential pillars for progress in a rapidly evolving world. 👉 Key topics included the transformative potential of the African Integrated High-Speed Rail Network (AIHSRN), presented by H.E. Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid أماني أبوزيد, and advancements in the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) and the Open Sales and Distribution Model (OSDM), both poised to enhance connectivity and passenger experiences globally. 👉 Sustainability was central to the agenda, with significant milestones such as the introduction of NDC templates for rail and the progress on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. These efforts aim to position rail as a leading solution in achieving global climate goals. The upcoming COP30 in Brazil is expected to further strengthen partnerships and advance sustainable transport initiatives. 👉 Regional and interregional cooperation featured prominently, with inspiring projects from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and other regions demonstrating the impact of local innovation on global rail advancements. Interregional collaboration emerged as a powerful tool for addressing shared challenges and amplifying the benefits of innovation across borders. 👉 The Standardisation Strategy 2030 remains a key focus, modernising technical documentation and enhancing interoperability to ensure seamless global rail operations. This strategy underscores the importance of creating a unified framework for efficiency, safety, and innovation in the rail sector. 👉 Looking forward, preparations for the 12th UIC World Congress on High-Speed Rail in Beijing, July 2025, are well underway. The congress will provide a platform for exchanging ideas, showcasing progress, and exploring solutions for modern transport challenges. “Our regions inspire our global vision, and the congress in Beijing will celebrate rail’s ability to connect people, economies, and ideas,” François DAVENNE concluded.
