Happy World Engineering Day.
This year’s theme, "Shaping Our Sustainable Future Through Engineering," underscores the critical role of engineers in driving innovation, sustainability, and long-term solutions to global challenges.
At today’s event, whose organizing committee was chaired by Eng. Jennifer Gache, PE, FIEK, key industry leaders emphasized the need for stronger collaboration, policy influence, and investment in local expertise to advance Kenya’s engineering sector. Eng. Gache noted that IEK has taken the engineering function closer to engineers by convening events not only in its eight branches but also across all counties in Kenya.
Prof. Eng. Siphila Mumenya, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, University of Nairobi, speaking on behalf of Prof. Margaret Hutchinson, Ag. Vice Chancellor, UoN, called for enhanced collaboration between academia, industry, and government to ensure inclusive and sustainable engineering solutions.
Eng. Barbara Adhoch, PE, MIEK, MACEK(FL), CEO, Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK), speaking on behalf of Eng. Jane Mutulili, Chair of ACEK, emphasized that engineers must have a seat at the policy decision-making table. She highlighted the need for procurement policies that prioritize sustainability over cost alone.
Eng. Harrison Keter, PE, MIEK, 1st Vice President, Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), representing Eng. Shammah Kiteme, CE, FIEK, PMP®, President of IEK, underscored the importance of investing in local engineers to build Kenyan expertise. He cited the Olkaria geothermal project as an example of how local capacity can drive success.
Eng. Erastus Mwongera, CE, FIEK, CBS, Chair of the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), highlighted Kenya’s progress toward global engineering recognition through its ongoing efforts to gain provisional signatory status under the Washington Accord.
Eng. Margaret Ogai, Registrar/CEO of Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), officially launched the Graduate Engineer Registration Portal, a milestone initiative aimed at simplifying registration, improving efficiency, and supporting young engineers as they transition into the profession.
As we mark World Engineering Day, let’s continue to champion sustainable, inclusive, and locally driven engineering solutions that shape a better future for all.
