The 39 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – places like Barbados, Grenada, Fiji and Vanuatu – are uniquely vulnerable to climate change – and they are already paying the price. Tropical cyclones and hurricanes have long battered small islands, but extreme storms and floods are happening more frequently. We have got better at measuring their economic effects – but we need to improve further. New research from ODI Global looks at extreme weather events directly affecting 35 island nations – the damaged homes, the injured people, ruined infrastructure; and at the impacts on GDP growth and public finances – changes that are not felt immediately, but affect of stalling economy stalls, loss of tourism, and expensive recovery plans that inhibit spending in other areas. In all, from 2000 to 2020, these direct and indirect impacts were estimated to cost small island states a total of US$141 billion. This stark reality in SIDS represents only a fraction of the true scale of impacts, particularly those arising from climate change induced slow-onset processes and slow-onset disasters, non-economic losses, etc. - elements that often do not get reflected in global databases like EM-DAT due to inclusion thresholds, gaps on data collection and methodological challenges to assess cascading and cumulative effects. Dedicated to building disaster resilience and tackling climate change through implementation of the Sendai Framework
Info
At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Extreme weather causes a rise in violence against women by their partners. But not all hazards do so in the same way. ♀️ Heatwaves were linked to immediate physiological effects, leading to aggression and violence. Storms or floods, on the other hand, take time to impact mental health and food security in ways that drive longer-term violent behaviour, according to SciDev.Net researchers. Violence against women and girls can and must be prevented. We need to reduce disaster risks – and the associated risks of violence against women and girls. 💪 ➡️ https://ow.ly/uXUL50UfZHm #NoExcuse

🚨 Tanzania 🇹🇿 launched its first early warnings national situation room in June this year, adding to the AfricanUnion #AMHEWAS early warning network. The Emergency Operation and Communication Center is a significant step towards disaster resilience. With real-time data integration, it facilitates early warnings to trigger timely action ahead of hazards. "This is an important milestone," said UNDRR head Kamal Kishore "The synthetic outputs that will come out of this situation room will help us prepare communities on the ground to take anticipatory action and protect lives and livelihoods." 🌍🔥 As climate extremes escalate, water storage is an increasingly vital tool for adapting to water-related challenges. Current approaches to water storage must change, says this The World Bank report: ‘business as usual’ is not a viable strategy. Read more 👉 https://ow.ly/2RUi50SHoNF

🌐The UN #COP29 climate talks concluded in Baku, Azerbaijan with a pledge by rich nations of at least $300 billion annually to the cause, but developing countries called this amount insufficient to rise to the global challenge of tackling climate-related losses and the impacts of increasingly frequent and severe disasters. UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell described the new finance goal agreed at COP29 as “an insurance policy for humanity”: “This deal will keep the clean energy boom growing and protect billions of lives.... But like any insurance policy – it only works if the premiums are paid in full, and on time.” A representative from a group of small island nations said: “After this COP29 ends, we cannot just sail off into the sunset. We are literally sinking.” More ➡️ https://ow.ly/FQ6150UfJ57

Disasters deepen poverty. People living in poverty are more likely to live in hazard-exposed areas and are less able to invest in risk-reducing measures. The lack of access to insurance and social protection means that people in poverty are often forced to use their already limited assets to buffer disaster losses, which drives them into further poverty.

💡Fewer people are dying as a result of disasters involving natural hazards, but many more people are having their lives disrupted. The number of disaster-affected people increased by 71% – up from 1,187 per 100,000 population in 2005-2014 to 2,032 in 2014-2023. During the same period, the average disaster-related mortality declined by 49%, from 1.62 per 100,000 population to 0.82. 🌐These are among the findings from the Sendai Framework Monitor, based on 2023 data from 160 (82%) of the world's countries. The findings show both advancements and ongoing challenges in global disaster risk reduction efforts – insights which are critical for making progress towards for achieving the SDGs, particularly those related to poverty reduction, health, and climate action. "COP29 comes at the close of a brutal year – a year seared by record temperatures, and scarred by climate disaster, all as emissions continue to rise," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, commenting on the outcomes of the UN Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11-22 November. 🌐 "I had hoped for a more ambitious outcome – on both finance and mitigation – to meet the great challenge we face," he said. "But this agreement provides a base on which to build." "It must be honoured in full and on time. Commitments must quickly become cash. All countries must come together to ensure the top-end of this new goal is met." "And I commend all the delegates, young people, and civil society representatives who came to Baku to push parties for maximum ambition and justice. I end with a message directly to them. Keep it up. The United Nations is with you. Our fight continues. And we will never give up." Read his full statement ➡️ https://ow.ly/klKb50UeFAr #COP29
