Every Little Bit Hurts Lyrics
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts
Every night I cry
Every night I sigh
Every night I wonder why
You treat me cold
Yet you won't let me go
[Verse 2]
Every little hurt counts
Every little hurt counts
You say you're coming home
Yet you never phone
Leave me all alone
My love is strong for you
I'd do wrong for you
[Bridge]
I can't take this
Loneliness you've given me
I can't go on
Giving my life away
[Chorus]
Oh, come back to me
Darling, you'll see
I can give you all the
Things that you wanted before
If you will stay with me, yeah
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts
To you, I'm a toy
And you're the boy
Who has to say
When I should play
Yet, you hurt me, desert me
[Instrumental Break]
[Chorus]
Come back to me
Darling, you'll see
I can give you all the
Things that you wanted before
If you will stay with me, yeah
[Outro]
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts
Every little bit hurts

The problem with “Every Little Bit Hurts” is that Barbara Wilson, wife of Motown producer Frank Wilson, had already recorded a demo of that song. … I didn’t want to sing it because I found her version overwhelming. I could never top that. And to think she also wanted a deal with Motown, just like me. But my producer Hal Davis, determined to give me a great future at Motown, was very persistent. ‘You’re gonna do this young lady! I’m the manager, you’re the singer, get behind that mic!’ I started to cry, but Hal kept saying, “It’s your song, Barbara Wilson has no right to it, you’re going to sing it.” Finally I did the recording.
What also made it complicated was that it was such a sad, grown-up text. I was sixteen and in love with several boys. Confusing puppy love each and every one because I was more concerned with playing the violin than with boys. I tried to ignore them all, but of course I couldn’t so I was always sad. What I mean to say is, I could identify with “Every Little Bit Hurts”.
