All Tomorrow’s Parties Lyrics

[Verse 1]
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties?
A hand me down dress from who knows where
To all tomorrow's parties
Where will she go, what shall she do
When midnight comes around?
She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown
And cry behind the door

[Verse 2]
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties?
Why silken trimmings of yesterday's gown
To all tomorrow's parties?
What shall she do with Thursday's rags
When Monday comes around?
She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown
And cry behind the door

[Verse 3]
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties?
For Thursday's child is Sunday's clown
For whom none will go mourning
A blackened shroud, a hand me down gown
Of rags and silks, a costume
Fit for one who sits and cries
For all tomorrow's parties

What did Japan say about "All Tomorrow's Parties"?
Genius Answer

In a 2021 interview, Rob Dean spoke about why the band chose to cover the song:

We knew “All Tomorrow’s Parties”, but David [Sylvian] brought it in, playing it on piano while we played around with it. The songs that work best as covers are those which are fairly basically structured, so you can do a lot with them. “All Tomorrow’s Parties” isn’t much more than a folk song – just chords and a voice. That was the case for “I Second That Emotion” too. Both songs came together pretty quickly and just fitted.

In a separate interview he added:

As a band, it was not unusual for us to take someone else’s song and adapt it and this was no exception. I personally was very happy with how it turned out. I think we changed it up sufficiently to put our mark on it. It was way better than [Bryan] Ferry’s rather average version, which came much later, I might add!
