My Mother & I Lyrics
My mother hates her body
We share the same outline
She swears that she loves mine
I blur at the edges
I'm all soft shapes and lines
Shapeshifting all the time
[Chorus]
The stars have a lot to say
About babies born in the month of May
We are down to Earth
We see eye to eye
We dig our feet in
My mother and I
My mother and I
[Verse 2]
They called me an old soul
When I was too young to know
The difference between a soul and a ghost
I feared what was inside
Trapped in my body kept from the other side
A spirit searching for her second life
[Chorus]
The stars have a lot to say
About women born in the month of May
We want love
Warm and forever
We want to die in the presence of our loved ones
My mother and I
My mother and I
About
On January 31, 2019, Lucy Dacus announced she would be releasing a series of singles associated with holidays throughout the year. Lucy stated in her original release, “Holidays are tough and I often write music to try to understand them, or listen to music to buoy myself through.”
“My Mother & I” was released on April 24, 2019 as the second in the series in honor of Mother’s Day. Lucy was adopted and references this fact in the release post on Instagram, thanking her “mothers”. In a press release, Dacus describes the song as being about what mothers pass on to daughters through “blood and body” (as in the case of her birth mother) and through “socialization and context” (as from her adoptive mother).
