Machete Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Yesterday, I felt so cold, I felt like I could die
Took the needles from my arms and put them to the sky
Watched the cold come take me, pull me down like I did know

I saw it gone, I saw it gone, I saw it gone, I saw it gone

[Verse 2]
Hold myself up 'til tomorrow holds me down again
Feel the darkness coming, oversee how it begins
Come with me into the willow garden out tonight
Feel the darkness come, my moon will touch you with its light

[Interlude]
eybdoog yas ot evah I

[Verse 3]
Help me life was over love I want to have you in my sight
Seeing I was overlooked, I had you in my hand
Like a lid of no survivors, not that I don't mind
Help me, broken baby, help me break you with my mind

[Outro]
With my mind
With my mind
With my mind
With my mind

Genius Annotation

“Machete” is the ninth track of American musician Moby’s studio album Play, released on May 17, 1999 through V2 Records.

It has got one of the few hard-hitting rhythms present on a generally quiet record, in coincidence with, perhaps, the most hallucinated lyrics we can hear on Play, dealing with feelings of defeat and sadness, due to depression or addiction, which devastate the main character.

The fans have recognised two prominent samples used for the instrumental and the sporadic additional vocals. Check them out here (from 7:06):

Genius Answer

It was the only song on the record that was really fun to play live. “Machete” was the only techno song. It’s such a weird song. To me it reminds of that late-‘80s EBM. When I was recording it, I was trying to be like Meat Beat Manifesto, Frontline Assembly, Skinny Puppy. That song was my direct influence from listening to too much Front 242.
