No. 1 Lyrics

[Intro: Tyla]
Ah, yeah

[Verse 1: Tyla]
It wasn't workin'
I pretended
Tried to finish
You wanna turn it all around
Dodging feelings
I'm too real to forget
I don't reason
No compromisin'

[Chorus: Tyla]
Okay, I'm leavin' tonight
Okay, I'm good in my life
I gotta put me number one
No compromisin'
Free from your grip in the world
Feel like the million girl
I gotta put me number one

[Verse 2: Tems]
You don't give me nothing
Not begging you for something, something
Virtually wasted, virtually tainted
But it's not worth it (No)
You're not my safety
How dare you call me "babe" when you can't be trusted?
Holding me back, boy, when you make me exhausted
I won't do it, time is up for you
I gotta prioritize
No more compromisin' me
[Chorus: Tyla & Tems]
Okay, I'm leavin' tonight
Okay, I'm good in my life
I gotta put me number one
No compromisin'
Free from your grip in the world
Feel like a million girl
I gotta put me number one
No compromisin'
Okay, I'm leavin' tonight
Okay, I'm good in my life
I gotta put me number one
No compromisin'
Free from your grip in the world
Feel like the million girl
I gotta put me number one
No compromisin'

[Outro: Tyla & Tems]
No compromisin'
I gotta put me number one

Genius Annotation

Track 5 of Tyla’s “TYLA”, “No.1 (feat. Tems), explores the idea of self-care and self-prioritization. The afrobeat-infused R&B song addresses the themes of independence and freedom, especially from an emotionally and mentally draining romantic relationship.

Together, Tyla and Tems collaboratively elicit the idea that isolating oneself from a relationship that is no longer beneficial and prioritizing oneself can lead to success in all facets of life.

What did Tyla say about "No. 1"?
Genius Answer

Tems and I had been wanting to make a song for long now. We ended up making it work, and Tems' voice alone is so amazing, so unique. The song is for everyone, but when I had it in mind, it was really for the girls—me and Tems, girl power, African girls-and we were just really pushing that message of ‘I’m leaving. I don’t need anybody. If this is not serving me anymore, I’m gone, and I’m going to be okay! Always put yourself before anything.
