With a seemingly paradoxical chorus, this song explores what being in love can do to a person. The narrator reveals their love, and therefore themselves, to the person they are in love with. They judge themselves and their worth on how the person responds.

In an interview about their album, Warpaint, the band’s lyricist describes the song’s title and its antithesis, “love is to not die”, as encompassing “the whole spectrum of life.” She explains how she sees love as “a focal point for humans” and “what we’re here for” which would logically tie it directly to our end and beginning.
