Death of a Cheerleader

Death of A Cheerleader is Pom Pom Squads debut album following their ‘Ow’ EP. This is the bands first release for the indie label City Slang.
The album was executive produced by PPS' along with the band and label-mates Illuminati Hotties. Illuminati Hotties also produced additional instrumentation on select songs of the album.

Prior to the albums release a series of singles were released to promote it, some of which made it to onto the album while a couple did not. A cover song, Cellophane , originally performed by FKA Twigs was the first song released during this album cycle-although the song didn’t end up making it on the album. Instead Cellophane served as a b-side to their single Crimson & Clover another cover song originally created by Tommy James (although the song was made popular by Joan Jett who is an influence for Pom Pom Squad). The idea for the a-side/b-side for these two songs was chosen as an homage to Tommy James CD which was titled “Crimson & Clover/Cellophane Symphony”.

Red With Love was their next single released and included a music video to coincide with this release. This would be the bands last single and music video released completely independently as the band signed to City Slang soon after. After the news broke that they were signed the singles Lux and Head Cheerleader would be released both with music videos to go along with them. They also released a Christmas song around this time called “Hello Santa Claus” which also contained a music video, but did not make the album and was more of a toungue-and-cheek Christmas song made more for fun than to be taken as serious as their other singles. The final single/music video to be released would be for the song Crying. Crying was released on the same week as the full album as to hype the fans up for its release.

At the beginning of the music video for Head Cheerleader the song Sound Check can be heard, this was done to contrast the albums arrangement, since the album starts out with Sound check and goes into Head Cheerleader for track 2. Similarly, a teaser to the song This Couldn’t Happen can be heard on the same music video. Before the release of the album this felt like it was an outro section of Head Cheerleader as it shares similar lyrics:

I’m squirming out of my skin. Is this really happening to me?“ (Chorus to "Head Cheerleader”)

The lyrical similarities was likely the reason they put the teaser in with the Head Cheerleader music video, but it also helped serve as more diverse sounds in their promotional material since “This Couldn’t Happen” is one of their softer songs.

Pom Pom Squad launched a tour with Illuminati Hotties in 2022. This makes PPS' first full length tour since their 2021 tour got canceled due to the CO VID pandemic.
