About us
Exposure to lead is a public health concern in Ghana. The populations most vulnerable to the effects of lead include pregnant women and children. Studies have revealed disturbing rates of blood lead levels among children in Ghana exposed to lead. Lead pollution can result in medical expenditures, failure in school, low productivity and economic output, as well as increases in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Sources of lead exposure in Ghana include residual contamination from leaded petrol (phased out in 2004), paints, pesticides, mining, recycling, and agricultural industries, and the informal or substandard recycling of used lead acid batteries (ULABs).

Pure Earth was honored to participate in the World Bank Regional Dialogue on Mercury and E-Waste Pollution Management in Tanzania earlier this month. Rev. Dr. Esmond Quansah, Pure Earth Ghana's Country Director, shared our innovative copper plate technology to remove mercury from gold mining tailings. Dr. Quansah also participated in a panel discussion on mercury-free mineral processing, sharing insights on reducing pollution and advancing sustainable practices. This vital gathering was part of the Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program, aimed at addressing pressing environmental issues and explore sustainable solutions across participating African countries, including Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia, along with other international organizations. Exciting times indeed as new cooking pots were handed over to schools in Ashaiman. Pure Earth has been carrying out an assessment of #lead in cookware in #educational institutions. According to the findings of the study, Pure Earth identified high lead levels in cookware used in preparing food for the children, as part of the #riskmitigation plan, Pure Earth Ghana being led by the country director Esmond Wisdom Quansah replaced the leaded cookware in participating schools with #cookware having lead concentrations below the recommended levels.

🌍💚 Last week, we hosted the First National Dialogue on Lead Pollution and Poisoning in Ghana, a pivotal event organized by Pure Earth in collaboration with UNICEF and USAID. This gathering aimed to set the tone for addressing the alarming issue of lead exposure in Ghana. I had the honor of leading our team to present an overview of lead pollution and poisoning in the country. The event highlighted urgent strategies and collective efforts needed to combat this serious public health threat. The dialogue was broadcast live on TV, reaching a wide audience and fostering crucial conversations around solutions. Together, we can tackle this menace and protect the health of our communities! #LeadPollution #PureEarth #HealthForAll

I was privileged to join the National Pb Dialogue organized by Pure Earth Ghana with partnership support from the UNICEF Ghana and USAID . On behalf of Green Advocacy Ghana (GreenAd) , we congratulate Pure Earth for this milestone!!! We have come a long way and there is a lot more to do. As part of my contribution to the dialogue, I applauded the works of our scientists but hinted on the need to improve communication of scientific findings in innovative ways to increase the reach, assimilation and impact of their works. Kafui DEY, I appreciate the efforts you are willing to put into this to project our scientific findings in a more interactive and understandable way to the wider populace. Let’s fight for a lead(Pb) free Ghana!!!
What an impactful day! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the national dialogue on lead poisoning and pollution, marking Pure Earth’s 25th anniversary. Together with UNICEF Ghana and USAID, we took crucial steps towards a lead-free future. #ILPPW24 #LeadFreeReality
