Going around the streets of Accra you come across the most delicious, state-of-the-art (West) African dishes has to offer. Fresh grilled fish with banku, okra soup spiced just right, jollof and chicken marinated with the authentic taste of shito. For good reasons Ghanaians take pride in their kitchen, and in as much as this needs to be cherished it also overshadows a structural problem. As a result of years of neglect of the agri-industrial complex the country has turned into a net importer of food, lacking both domestic competition in the market as well as production power at scale. More than 90% of poultry is imported and over 50% of rice for household consumption comes from overseas, while cacao processors are running dry due to unprecedented shortages of beans. At Rabo Foundation we believe the key to overcome these value chain dependencies is to (re)invest in the producers and producer-based organisations. Only through putting (smallholder) farmers at the centre can food security challenges in the future be averted, especially in the wake of climate change shocks. We do this by supporting MFIs that reach rural clients and provide access to finance in regions, and for groups, where capital is scarce. Ideally we partner up with players like Livelihoods Venture, Mars, Touton SA, SINAPI ABA SAVINGS AND LOANS COMPANY LIMITED, and Solidaridad Network to leverage on scale and impact so cacao farmers in Sunyani region can flourish, with Success For People Microfinance or Baobab Group to allow yam farmers to have a living income in the northern belt. We explore innovative business models that produce organic fertilizer or superfoods like True Moringa powder, cultivated with regenerative practices. We strengthen the backbone of the horticulture sector through companies like AB Farms or Fruitmaster so fresh vegetables are available and contribute to healthy diets. It was a privilege to sit down with all these local agents for change and celebrate years of partnership, thank you for making me feel Akwaaba and a big Medasi for your hospitality. Until we meet again! Rosina Obeng, CFA

🚨🌍💰 Key transactions in Africa finance today 1. Significant Loans and Investment in Kenya: The Kenyan Treasury's borrowing of Sh223.5 billion from 11 new loans signals an aggressive push for infrastructural and social development. This includes funds aimed at refinancing the maturing Eurobond, improving the financial viability of Kenya Power, developing urban roads, and strengthening the health system. The diverse nature of these loans indicates a strategic multifaceted approach to tackle immediate fiscal responsibilities and longer-term developmental goals [3]. 2. Shift Toward Survival Loans in Kenya: The increased reliance on survival loans by Kenyan borrowers, with potential loan defaults forecasted to hit Sh700 billion, points to a concerning trend in financial distress among consumers. This shift could significantly affect the banking sector's stability and indicates an economy under strain as households prioritize basic needs over investment or expansion [4]. 3. Mining Investment in Africa: The launch of the Africa Green Mining Fund aiming to raise $150 million for mining projects focused on transition metals and green minerals is a noteworthy development. It showcases a growing focus on sustainable and responsible mining practices in the continent. Furthermore, it highlights a strategic move towards leveraging Africa's vast mineral wealth in a manner that is environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial to local economies [10]. 4. Broadband Connectivity Development in Nigeria: The landing of the 2Africa submarine cable system in Nigeria, enhancing broadband connectivity, is a strategic investment set to drive economic development in the South-South, South-East, and North-Central regions of the country. By improving internet reliability and capacity, this project aligns with broader goals of digital transformation and economic diversification in Africa. It indicates a significant investment in the continent's ICT infrastructure, which is pivotal for modern economic growth [17]. 5. Expanding Financial Services to Rural Ghana: The call by the CEO of SINAPI ABA SAVINGS AND LOANS COMPANY LIMITED for government support to microfinance institutions underscores the importance of financial inclusion in Africa's rural areas. Improving access to financial services in these regions can play a critical role in alleviating poverty and facilitating small-scale entrepreneurship. This aligns with broader development objectives and indicates ongoing efforts to enhance financial inclusivity in Ghana [23]. 💡 Discover new insights and perspectives on vlepo.ai, your reliable and up-to-date research companion: https://lnkd.in/g72836Kp #africa #finance #startups #entrepreneurship
