At-Turaif Diriyah, Saudi Arabia By Speirs Major Light Architecture, Diriyah Company l شركة الدرعية The epic scale and historical significance of the ancient city of At-Turaif come to life after dark in a beautifully layered and nuanced tapestry of golden light. Light articulates the stories hidden in the layers of buildings, courtyards, and archaeological remnants, capturing and reflecting the site’s extraordinary spirit and creating a remarkable experience of a living national monument. The first capital of the Saudi state and UNESCO World Heritage site dates from the 15th century. Located on a raised site at the edge of the ad-Dir’iyah oasis, in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula, it includes the remains of many palaces and an urban settlement. We amplified this extraordinary sensation of stepping into another time and place, animating the subtle tonal variations in the natural materials to feel as if they were lit by flickering torchlight. The exact shade of golden light allows the mud-brick walls to glow beautifully, naturally, and appropriately. Speirs Major Light Architecture extensive experience in city light master planning was instrumental in managing the project's sheer scale. In its raised position, the site is the primary focal point in the landscape when viewed from the developing Diriyah Gate across Wadi Hanifah #lightingdesign #lightingdesignmag

BBMG Science and Technology Park Beijing by Aedas, Lighting Design Partnership International - LDPi Phase 1 of the Zhongguancun Xisanqi Jinyu Science and Technology Park is located in the Northeast corner of the Beijing Haidian district, at the intersection between Jiancaicheng West Road and Jiancaicheng Middle Road. This science and technology park stands out from others as Aedas shaped the buildings as a merger between the verticality of ancient bamboo slips used by the Shang dynasty wrapping the buildings and the waviness of technology advancements represented by time pulsation found in the curvy vertical and horizontal carves.LDPi took the opportunity to not only reveal the verticality of these bamboo slips and these curves but also to differentiate them based on color temperatures according to the specific colors of the curtain wall. Poly Corporation Headquarters Beijing by WSP Architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) In Beijing, SOM created a striking headquarters building that unifies the Poly Corporation's subsidiaries. Office spaces surround a 90-meter-tall atrium, enclosed by the world’s largest cable-net-supported glass wall. With its distinctive design, retail and social amenities, transit connections, and Class A office spaces, Poly Corporation Headquarters is designed as an exceptional place to work. The wide spans optimize office layouts while maintaining access to natural light. With its strong architectural presence, efficiency, and flexibility, the building set the tone for future developments south of the site. The stone-clad building’s triangular form minimizes the perimeter exposure to the elements, while interior atria give office areas maximum access to daylight. The resulting L-shaped office plan cradles the main atrium and enhances a sense of community by allowing office workers to see into other building areas. The northeast orientation also responds to the region’s cold climate by providing greater access to direct natural daylight. #lightingdesign #lightingdesignmag

Torrey View Office San Diego by Luma Lighting Design Located in San Diego, California, the Torrey View development consists of three biotechnology workplace buildings and an amenity building on a 10-acre landscaped site toward the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by hills and canyons. The developer aimed to create a state-of-the-art environment for fostering scientific advancements and innovation while surrounded by the awe-inspiring terrain. Flad Architects designed the façade of the building to reflect the local stepped geological formations of the Torrey Pines area. LUMA’s concept was to enhance the coffered fenestration with simple linear light lines, creating light and shadow in unconventional patterns. The lighting concept for the site was to illuminate the paths while keeping the lighting as low as possible, without distracting from the unique views of the ocean. Each of the three lab buildings has a unique architectural program, respectively: a large auditorium stair, a dining space, and a fitness center. Each building also has a terrace level with views of the ocean. LUMA focused on highlighting the materials for each space to enhance the architecture. The amenity building is the jewel of the campus and LUMA illuminated the stepped ceiling from the ground to maximize the impact of the ceiling. This building also features a bar that is visible from the inner site as well as on the front side of the development.
