🌱 Happy International Day of Education! 🌱 Today, we celebrate the power of education in transforming lives and ensuring access to justice for everyone. At Equal Justice 平義社, we believe that by providing clear and accessible legal information, we empower everyday people and the NGO frontline workers that serve them, to spot legal problems, make informed and effective decisions and access legal support more quickly. We bring the law out of the books and into people's hands and phones. In 2024, our Community Legal Education Programme delivered 30 legal education sessions to 287 attendees and 27 NGOs. Sincere thanks to everyone who participated; the HK social impact organisations which came to learn about the law; and to the #ProBonoLawyers who generously gifted their time and expertise. #IDE2025 #CommunityLegalEducation #LawforGood #AccesstoJustice #NoOneLeftBehind

Reducing hardship and poverty by providing legal access to some of Hong Kong’s most disadvantaged people. #AllRise
About us
Equal Justice 平義社 is a Hong Kong-based charity that works to increase and improve community legal access for some of the city’s most disadvantaged people and, in so doing, to reduce their poverty and hardship. The whole of society, and the economy, benefit when people facing a legal problem get the information and support they need. We help disadvantaged people to anticipate, prevent and solve their legal problems by providing legal information, connectivity and navigation support. Our education and research work addresses the systemic and root causes of the justice poverty gap. We are a digitally-committed, community impact charity with tax-exempt charitable status in Hong Kong SAR. We strive to be open, inclusive, people-centred, and transparent. We are non-judgmental, non-partisan and non-secular.

🙏🏼 Huge thanks to the Singapore International School (Hong Kong) and the @Zhong Guo Long Charity Foundation, and especially @Thomas Lee for their generous donation and to The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong for the hamper of very delicious pineapple tarts. 🧧The Singapore International School put on an excellent show; what a beautiful way to start the Lunar New Year Celebrations! All these community contributions and collaborations combine to enable us, and many other charities, to keep going. For us, it means we can give free ‘legal first aid’ to people who cannot afford or otherwise access legal support. #SincereThanks and #Appreciation from all of us here! #CommunityLegalAccess #AccesstoJustice #NoOneLeftBehind

This new year marks a new chapter in our mission to bring free legal support into the community, with a change in programme leadership. Vivian C., a HKU law graduate, lawyer and Chevening Scholar, and a deeply committed and effective access to justice leader, leaves Hong Kong for pastures new. We send gratitude to Vivian for her leadership in delivering ‘law for good’ and hope Vivian’s hard-wired humility permits her a moment to reflect upon her work here, helping hundreds upon hundreds of disadvantaged women, children and men to get the free legal help they need, while also managing a busy and brilliant casework team. “To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived, this is to have succeeded.” (President Jimmy Carter) As we bid fond farewell to Vivian, we are delighted to welcome newly promoted Judy Chan and Dr. Thomas Ittner as our legal programme co-leads. Both bring a wealth of experience, diverse perspectives, and a shared commitment to excellence that will propel our mission forward. Judy is a Hong Kong-qualified lawyer and worked on the post-build, growth phase of CLIX Hong Kong 法律 · 公益 · 連繫社區 and its related legal matters. Thomas is a Germany-qualified lawyer with Hong Kong casework and community legal education experience. Their combined skills provide our clients, our team, and the legal and community sectors, with the skills and compassion needed to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to getting legal help. Judy and Thomas report to our Director of People & Programmes, Celine Dermine, a Belgium-qualified lawyer and lifelong advocate for legally underserved communities. #ThankYouVivian, for everything - from our #board, #team, our #clients and the wider #HongKongCommunity - we wish you the very best. And to Judy and Thomas, here’s to new beginnings with exciting times and new challenges ahead! #202Thrive #LawforGood #SocialImpactLaw #LegalFirstAid #AllRise #ForMoreFreeCommunityLegalAccess 📸Svetlana Dampier

DID YOU KNOW? “The inability to access legal and justice services can be both a result and a cause of poverty. People who are more vulnerable to social exclusion typically report more justice problems than other groups.” Every donation, big or small, matters! Even if you cannot give this time, we'd love it if you could consider whether: ▫️Your office, your club or your sports team could help raise or even match funds? ▫️Equal Justice could be the next 'charity of choice' for your kids’ school, a fundraising or sports event or even a gala dinner? ▫️There is a charitable committee or a foundation you could recommend and connect us to? #ThankYou very much indeed for considering our request for help, referrals and funding nominations. 🧡We need all of it!
