Constructed 28 metres deep into the ground and anchored on solid granite, the HKSH Proton Therapy Centre is not only a breakthrough in cancer care but also an engineering miracle to behold. Our meticulously designed proton therapy system comprises two 150-ton half-rotating gantries, two 15m tall radiation-shielded bunker chambers, a four magnet-ring synchrotron and an advanced bream transport system across two levels. The system is ingeniously positioned in a vertically stacked format, making it an excellent example of compact design configurations suitable for densely populated urban areas like Hong Kong. This video will take you on a journey to witness the establishment of Hong Kong’s first-ever proton therapy centre which will bring new hope and new treatment option to cancer patients in the city and beyond. #HKSH #HKSHMedicalGroup #HongKongSanatoriumHospital #TheLiShuFanMedicalFoundation #HealthTech #Medical #MedicalEducation #MedicalResearch #MedTech #MedicalTechnology #ProtonTherapy #Research

This year, OSC is supporting 11 beneficiary organisations dedicated to meaningful causes. These include helping individuals with disabilities, empowering youth and the elderly, supporting patients with hearing impairments, and promoting environmental protection. During the HKSH OSC Month (12 November - 16 December), over 2,100 HKSH colleagues participated in the Brisk Walk Challenge! Each submission of their walking app records or videos raised HK$200, including a matching fund from HKSH. A Brisk Walk Marathon was also held on 16 December during the HKSH Christmas Party, where teams from various departments relayed throughout the day to raise even more donations for OSC. The highlight of the Party was undoubtedly the "Super Chef with Love" , where 4 teams – comprising hospital management and clinical staff – showcased their culinary talents by preparing delicious and nutritious All-Day Breakfast. Meanwhile, other colleagues indulged in the pineapple bun eating competition, charity sales, and game booths, bringing festive cheer to the event. At HKSH, we are committed to extending our care beyond just our patients. We strive to touch lives across various sectors and age groups, ensuring that the love and compassion of HKSH permeate the community. Warmest wishes for the holiday season! We are thrilled to announce that for the third consecutive year, HKSH Medical Group has proudly partnered with the 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 (𝗘𝗗𝗢) for the E-League Programme. With the aim of "Promoting Self-reliance, Steeling Oneself, and Contributing to the Community", this programme organises a series of activities annually to inspire students to push their boundaries, identify their strengths and give back to society. We have been invited for three years to host a one-day hospital visit for students, providing them with a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the healthcare field. Through the facilitation of the 𝗛𝗞𝗦𝗛 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗛𝗞𝗦𝗛 𝗜𝗜𝗣𝗗), which was newly established in May 2024 to actualise the ongoing dedication of HKSH to advancing medical education and research, three E-league students recently embarked on an enlightening "job-tasting" day at various units within the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. They had the chance to explore our key facilities including the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre, Physiotherapy Centre, and hospital wards. Engaging in insightful discussions with our medical specialists and clinical teams, the students broadened their perspectives on orthopaedics, physiotherapy, and hospital operations. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the EDO to further nurture talent and empower young minds. Together, let’s inspire and develop the next generation of healthcare leaders and innovators. #HKSH #HKSHMedicalGroup #HongKongSanatoriumHospital #EasternDistrictOffice #HealthcareCollaboration #IIPD #MedicalEducation #TalentDevelopment #YouthDevelopment #YouthEmpowerment

Spinal problems have become an increasingly prevalent health issue in Hong Kong which not only impacts one’s physical health but also quality of life. HKSH Medical Group recently conducted a spinal health survey and found that as high as 87% of the 813 respondents had experienced spinal pain within the past year, with nearly half reporting sleep disturbances, and 37% experiencing negative emotions due to pain or limited mobility. Common symptoms included muscle tension, musculoskeletal pain, radiating pain, numbness, and limited mobility. Back pain (58%) and neck pain (54%) were the most prevalent amongst respondents, followed by sciatica (30%). 28% of respondents reported experiencing two or more spinal problems concurrently. Approximately 20% of respondents reported persistent back or neck pain lasting over three months, indicating a significant proportion of chronic cases. Spinal degeneration, deformities and osteoporosis are the leading perceived causes of spinal disorders. HKSH establishes a Spine Centre to address spinal problems for patients with a holistic and multidisciplinary approach involving orthopaedic specialists, neurosurgeons, pain specialists and rehabilitation experts to provide personalised treatment. HKSH Spine Centre will also collaborate closely with HKUMed – The University of Hong Kong on clinical consultations and medical research into complex spinal disorders and advanced treatment technologies to enhance treatment effectiveness and facilitate patient recovery. As the age-old adage goes, “Health is wealth”. Integrating health and wealth goals can lead to a balanced and fulfilling life. Following HKSH Eastern Medical Centre’s partnership with HSBC to launch a comprehensive health assessment package for HSBC Global Private Banking & Premier Elite clients, Dr. Joseph CHAN, Chief Medical Officer of HKSH Medical Group and Deputy Medical Superintendent of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, recently participated in the activation ceremony at the HSBC Premier 3.0 event alongside representatives from other HSBC partnering private hospitals in Hong Kong. In addition, Dr Chan was invited as a guest speaker at a fireside chat to discuss the aspirations of and challenges faced by the affluent class regarding health and retirement protection. When choosing the right health assessment plan, Dr Chan advised that rather than opting for the package with the lowest price or the most check-up items, it is more important to select a targeted health assessment plan that specifically focuses on one’s health circumstances. With the growing incidence of cancers in Hong Kong, Dr Chan stressed the key role that regular cancer screening tests play in detecting abnormal lesion, which can effectively improve the cure rate. Leading a healthy lifestyle from a young age, with regular exercise and a balanced diet, is always one of the key elements of living a fulfilling retirement life during our golden years. #HKSHEasternMedicalCentre #HSBCWealthandPersonalBanking #Retirement #HealthCheck #PreventiveCare #WellnessPartnership
