Sapere was asked to provide a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) for a proposed new medical school at Waikato University, commissioned by the Ministry of Health. This work is part of a larger effort to address the need for more general practitioners (GPs) in rural New Zealand. The analysis, prepared as part of the business case, evaluates options to expand medical training and improve healthcare access in underserved regions. The Ministry of Health's memorandum of understanding with the University of Waikato reflects the significance of this initiative, with the Coalition Agreement requiring a full CBA before further commitments are made. The report highlights the complexities of increasing rural GP coverage. While partially redacted, it’s a key step in this evolving process. Despite Laboratory Medicine being a large and varied part of healthcare, contributing to an estimated 80% of clinical decisions for patients, it is an area often omitted from or not emphasized in MD curricula. Medical students-in-training are, in many cases, reliant on discovering laboratory medicine through extracurricular activities or if they happen to choose an elective in a laboratory medicine subject. “With Laboratory Medicine, the best way to understand it is to experience it first-hand. We can’t bring lots of medical students into the clinical laboratories, so we came up with a way to bring the labs to the students,” explains Dr. Carlo Hojilla. That solution was the LMP Summit - an immersive weekend for MD students across Canada to learn more about Lab Medicine. GPs – UNSUCCESSFUL OR REAL DOCTORS? A study has investigated what comments medical students hear about general practitioners (GP) during their education. The study aimed to shed light on attitudes towards the GP profession and work in rural area, and gain insight into the culture within medical education. THE STUDY SHOWS THAT: 🔹 Attitudes towards the general practitioner profession are reflected in comments from teachers and clinical tutors, gathered from medical students in a survey with open-text responses. 🔹Appreciative comments included »important«, »varying«, »responsible work«, »broad skills«, and »good working hours«. 🔹Deprecatory comments included »stressful jobs«, »unstimulating routine work«, »incompetent doctors«, and »low status«. 🔹During their education, medical students hear negative comments about GPs and their field, which may influence their choice of the GP profession. Waitaha Canterbury recently piloted an initiative to integrate medical students into part-time roles at six general practices, aiming to reduce the administrative workload for GPs, while offering students hands-on experience in primary care.   Led by the Primary Care Taskforce, the pilot saw students take on tasks like reviewing clinical inboxes, annotating letters and processing discharge summaries that reduced the administrative load on GPs with overwhelmingly positive feedback. Practices reported a noticeable reduction in GPs' workloads, freeing up time for more clinical work. Four practices also noted improved GP wellbeing due to reduced pressure.
