  • We are so honoured to share the exciting moment for the Donation of Asia’s first world class medical device to the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine in the Press Con, by bridging the livestream of the fascinating demo by Professor Albert Chan and the surprise appearance of Mr Li Ka Shing. Thank you for the trust by all our working partners from the Li Ka Shing Foundations and HKUMed.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, HKUMed has become the first institution in Asia to receive a medical device that uses ultrasound to destroy tumours. The device uses histotripsy technology that directs ultrasound to create bubbles in tumours to destroy the cells. Clinical trials using the technology to treat liver cancer will begin at Queen Mary Hospital within days, with the Foundation supporting this novel treatment for 10 patients. “I am very honoured to lead the initial clinical trials in Hong Kong,” said Professor Albert Chan from the Department of Surgery. “We expect histotripsy to be a safe and effective treatment option for liver tumours in the local patient population and the treatment to result in a significant reduction in tumour size and volume, with minimal adverse effects.” “I eagerly await in fascination the powerful benefits of histotripsy treatments to be extended beyond cancer to tackle other conditions, as it not only shines bright as hope to patients, but also a conduit to reduce the increasing burden of our medical budget,” said Mr Li Ka Shing. Innovation is most inspiring when we get below the surface of the people and companies who have been driving it. Being the bank for visionary entrepreneurs and investors, we strive to go beyond private banking for our clients, connecting them with people and global opportunities that all of us at HSBC have to offer.
