🚀 #SDS2024 — The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) recently reported that a fragment of space debris, identified as a separation ring from a rocket, fell from the sky and landed in Mukuku Village, Makueni County, on 30 December 2024. The piece of metal is 2.5 meters in diameter and weigh over 500 kg — roughly the weight of a grand piano. The KSA has assured the public that the object poses no immediate threat to safety and is currently under investigation. This incident highlights the growing concern over #SpaceDebris and the need for international cooperation and stricter regulations under international space law to prevent such occurrences. #OASA #AAIL #APSCC #EPFL #GSOA #HKU #IAA #LSR #SIAIndia #UNOOSA #GSSHub #SpaceDebris #SpaceSustainability

A pioneer in law, technology and the evolving NewSpace industry.

🚀 On 2 January 2025, Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI, 香港工業總會) released a research report titled “𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴” — Download the report: https://lnkd.in/g44JBmZf) Conducted by teams from City University of Hong Kong the report provides an in-depth analysis of global #Newspace economy trends and Hong Kong’s participation opportunities. The report suggests that Hong Kong should develop ten industry sectors, including satellites, drones, and sensors, and proposes policy recommendations to enhance education and cross-sector collaboration. FHKI Chairman, Mr. Steve Chuang (莊子雄) emphasised Hong Kong’s unique advantages in developing the space economy. He urged the government to formulate relevant industrial policies to leverage Hong Kong’s research foundation, transforming aerospace research capabilities into part of ‘new industrialisation,’ and exploring broader business opportunities in the space economy. The report recommends focusing on ten sectors: satellite-related industries and services, drone-related industries, sensor technology and IoT applications, precision and lean manufacturing, robotics technology, new materials science, precision agriculture and urban farming, ecological management and environmental technology, space law and international dispute resolution, and space-related corporate financing services. Hong Kong is well-positioned to participate in the Newspace economy, with top universities, strong engineering faculties, strategic location near Hainan satellite launch facilities, and status as a major financial centre. The report calls for strengthening cross-sector collaboration, enhancing interdisciplinary research, optimising university curriculum design, and increasing internship opportunities. Strengthening cooperation and talent exchange with the Greater Bay Area is also crucial. The Government should also provide incentives to encourage corporate R&D and collaboration with academia, and improve laws and regulations to optimise the business environment. — 🚀 Come join the conversation by attending OASA’s first 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗕𝗶𝘇 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀 in 2025. We begin… Some tough questions to ponder as we go forward: 1. What will our unskilled workers be doing to earn a living in the #NewSpace economy? 2. In what ways can Hong Kong be the protocol and standard’s interface between the Mainland and the rest of the world? 3. How can we help the tycoons in Hong Kong re-invent this city in preparation for this next innovation wave? 4. How to lower the risks for investors and those not conversant with #innovation and afraid of change? 5. Where are the ‘low-hanging’ fruits? What business can we start? Where are our talents? Where will investors come from? Thoughts? Join OASA and start your own Spacebiz Dialogue. #FHKI #oasa #cityu #hongkong #Newspace #china #YMP #spacebiz
