Earlier this month, SFi’s Head of Innovation, Christine Yu joined a panel hosted by SYNCICAP Asset Management and HKU iCube on "Driving Innovation for Good – Climate Impact, Ocean Impact". On the panel, Christine spoke about SFi members’ seasoned experience in investing in the #BlueEconomy. “As a community, our members typically invest in the blue economy through the lens of top thematics such as Food & Agriculture and Circularity/Innovative Materials.” She also shared some examples of previous investments made in this important and growing sector. Did you know… ⚡️ That renewable electricity (wind and solar) will not be sufficient in the energy transition and that solutions in renewable gas (biogas, biomethane, biofuels) will have to be ramped up to meet our energy transition needs. The IEA (International Energy Agency) estimates that $37 trillion in investment is required by 2050 globally to finance the worldwide energy transition, of which $18 trillion must still be committed; 🐠 That the Ocean is and should be at the heart of combating Climate Change as it is responsible for absorbing 90% of the excess heat produced; it is responsible for 50% of the oxygen that we breathe and 78% of all animal biomass is in the ocean. Yet the ocean is collapsing as we speak. Re-generating the ocean is saving the planet and saving human-kind; 👨🎓 That our sister company SWEN Capital Partners is at the forefront of Renewable Energy investments and is recognized as a global leader and as an authority in the Blue Economy with its first fund now being introduced as standard reading material for Harvard business students showcasing how finance blends with nature.
