The Mekong Club works with the private sector to bring about sustainable practices against modern slavery.
About us
The Mekong Club is a catalyst for change, uniting and mobilizing businesses to bring about sustainable practices towards the fight against modern slavery. Given that the majority of modern-day slavery exists in the private sector, these companies are ideally placed to help turn the tide of this global epidemic. The only organisation of its kind, The Mekong Club steers away from the approach taken by other players in this space, which is to ‘name and shame’ companies – ousting bad behaviour or issues related to this subject. Instead, we believe in starting and ending with collaboration. In fact, The Mekong Club originally formed as a direct response to the growing number of companies looking to develop strategies to address forced labour risk through a professional forum. Divided into industry-specific working groups, these networks meet regularly to learn, share best practices, and network with other like-minded professionals. Member companies also work together to achieve an annual deliverable which will work towards producing tangible results in the fight against forced labour. We have identified four industries within the private sector that we believe have the greatest opportunity to impact change. They are: financial services, apparel & footwear, hospitality providers and retailers. Did you know that our CEO, Matthew Friedman, has spent over 40 years of his career addressing modern slavery and human trafficking? In this episode of Regulatory Ramblings, he shares his experiences and insights on this global crisis. Tune in to learn more about the scale of the problem and how the private sector can make a difference. #RegulatoryRamblings #ModernSlavery #HumanTrafficking
In episode #59 of Regulatory Ramblings, Matthew Friedman, CEO of The Mekong Club and a former US and UN diplomat, reflects on over 40 years battling modern slavery and human trafficking. With experience in 40+ countries and expertise that spans governments, banks, and corporations, Matt brings unique insights into tackling this global crisis. He unravels why this dark trade is everyone’s concern, with a particular focus on the private sector’s unique ability to drive meaningful change. He highlights the scale of the problem—50 million people trapped in slavery, with 27 million in forced labor, much of it tied to supply chains. Matt also addresses the alarming rise of scam centers, where victims are trafficked into schemes like “pig butchering,” tricking people out of their life savings while enduring brutal conditions themselves. Key topics include: 👉 The evolution of trafficking into elaborate scams like pig butchering and scam centers 👉 Why $236B in crime profits dwarfs the $400M spent fighting trafficking 👉 How financial institutions can identify red flags and protect themselves 👉 Building changemakers within the private sector Matt’s candid insights offer a sobering yet inspiring call to action. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation for insights - 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. #RegulatoryRamblings podcast is brought to you by The University of Hong Kong's Reg/Tech Lab (Building Better Financial Systems), HKU-SCF Fintech Academy, Asia Global Institute, and HKU-edX Professional Certificate in FinTech, with support from HKU Law. We're thrilled to have our Senior Advisor, Wiebke Flach, speak at the 2nd Seminar Series on Governance, Institutions, and Sustainability from Birkbeck Faculty of Business and Law. Join us to explore the challenges and opportunities in corporate sustainability, particularly within Asian supply chains. 📅 26 November 2024, 13:00 — 14:00 👉 Book now: https://lnkd.in/esbmFEcj
Join our upcoming event on "Balancing Act: A practical exploration of social and environmental supply chain due diligence in East Asia" with Wiebke Flach When: 26 November 2024, 13:00 — 14:00 Venue: Online Book now: https://lnkd.in/esbmFEcj Abstract: Within the context of increasingly demanding legislation on environmental and social due diligence, corporate sustainability professionals are arguably overwhelmed. The business implementation of necessary processes lags behind international standards. This session aims to present examples of day to day trade offs and dilemmas that are common in Asian supply chains of retailers. Lack of supply chain transparency, accountability structures and meaningful data will be explored in a context of textile and household item production. We will explore the working reality of sustainability professionals as well as the perspective of suppliers. To conclude, some industry tools and governance structures that could enable better preventative and mitigating measures will be discussed. SMEs are essential to ensuring the successful implementation of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD). To support this critical role, The Mekong Club and EuroCham Vietnam co-organised an interactive training session aimed at empowering SMEs in Vietnam with the knowledge and practical tools to identify, prevent, and mitigate labour risks within their operations and supply chains. 🗒 49 participants attended the session in Vietnamese, and 30 participants joined the session in English. Both groups were highly engaged, discussing ILO indicators, actionable strategies for addressing labour risks, and emphasising the need for comprehensive support to help SMEs implement due diligence requirements effectively. 🔎 For SMEs looking to take the next step, The Mekong Club Supplier Portal provides free resources to help companies identify and manage forced labour risks in their supply chains. (https://lnkd.in/g_ixGpem) A big thank you to KKR, EuroCham Vietnam, and our partner Raise Partners for their support in making this event a success! Congrats Giang Nguyen and Clémence Aron for delivering an engaging training session, and Marieke van der Pijl for opening the session. #CSDDD #Compliance #HRDD #forcedlabour #SMEs #Sustainablebusiness #Supplychainmanagement"
