This is one of the most well-known Kafka's works. I've read before in Japanese. If you've never read his works, I think it's difficult to understand in English. The middle part was depressing, but the end I feel refreshed. This is the book of surrealism!

I found the ending startling.
The family member of the protagonist, especially his sister, begins to be annoyed by the protagonist bit by bit.
At the end, she said “he cannot understand us. As if he could understand us, he would have gone somewhere for us to let us be free”.
That made the protagonist realize that he no longer has any hope so he should just disappear.
Sad ending.
