What makes SOIL toilets so special? ⭐️ Our container-based toilets don’t just manage waste—they transform it. 💫 Waste is safely collected in green containers (pictured above), where a mix of sugarcane husk and compost acts as a natural “flush.” Each week, our collection team picks up the containers and transports them to SOIL’s composting site. In celebration of Black History Month we’re excited to reiterate the profound impact that Haiti and Haitian leaders have had not only on the course of American history, but the world. 🌎 Some incredible facts about Haiti that we’d like to state again: ⭐️ Haiti was the first nation to permanently abolish slavery ⭐️ Haiti is the world’s first Black Republic ⭐️ Haiti’s successful revolution challenged the global institution of slavery After gaining independence in 1804, Haiti played a key role in supporting other nations in their fights for freedom. Some of these countries include: 🇻🇪 Venezuela – Haiti provided arms, supplies, and refuge to Simón Bolívar in 1815, aiding his fight against Spanish rule. In return, Haiti asked Bolívar to abolish slavery in the liberated territories. 🇨🇴 🇪🇨 🇵🇪 Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia – Through Bolívar’s campaigns, Haiti’s support indirectly contributed to the liberation of these nations from Spanish control. 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic – Haiti abolished slavery in the eastern part of the island (now the Dominican Republic) after unifying Hispaniola in 1822, though the Dominican Republic later gained independence in 1844. Though Haiti faced economic and political isolation as a result of the revolution, its freedom remains a powerful symbol of resilience and Black liberation around the world. ⭐️ #BlackHistoryMonth #HaitianRevolution

⭐️ SOIL Research Team Update ⭐️ 📈 In July and August 2024, our research team met with leaders from several communes where EkoLakay’s service expansion is deemed a high priority. 💧In these interviews we discussed the impact of the EkoLakay service in their communities, SOIL’s expansion plans, and sought their guidance on identifying households that would benefit most from sanitation. ♻️ As EkoLakay grows, SOIL and the Haitian Ministry of Water and Sanitation (DINEPA) have worked together to ensure that SOIL’s mission aligns with the Haitian government’s national sanitation strategy, which requires sanitation providers to implement market-based approaches for service provision. 🇭🇹 DINEPA has a policy in Haiti against the free provision of sanitation services that stems from the historical impact of NGOs offering free services that create dependency on foreign subsidies.
