ERIA delegation, led by Mr. Reo Kawamura, Director of ERIA’s Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris, participated in various activities in the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) for the global #plastictreaty in Busan last week. Highlights included participation in the INC-5 plenary, a roundtable discussion on policy approaches and global collaboration hosted by the Korean Environment Institute (KEI), and a side event on Southeast Asia's readiness for the plastic treaty organized by Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP)- World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia. 📅 On 27 November 2024, Indonesia NPAP, World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, ERIA: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP), UNSW, and Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP), in collaboration with Sirsak and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners organized a Side Event of the INC-5: Enhanced Readiness of The Southeast Asian Region in Addressing Plastic Pollution under Plastic Treaty: Regional Collaboration to Address Plastic Pollution Across Its Lifecycle. 🎤 The session was initiated with welcome remarks from Clemence Schmid, Global Plastic Action Partnership Director, World Economic Forum. ⚡️Here are the highlights of the session - Reo Kawamura, Director of the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris at ERIA, explores ASEAN's priorities for the implementation of the Global Plastic Treaty (GPT), including from its members and existing regional frameworks - Bella Charlesworth, Research Associate, University of New South Wales Centre for Development Reform, dives into the role of data to support the implementation of the Global Plastic Treaty SEA countries in implementing the GPT's provision. - Rocky Guzman, International Governance, Legal, and Policy Specialist, Asian Development Bank (ADB), examines the opportunities provided by the GPT for SEA Countries within the aspects of Financing, Capacity Building, and Technological Transfer - Lucia Karina, Vice President of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia, presents the role of the private sector in driving market and scale circular solutions to support the implementation of the GPT #indonesaNPAP #NPAP #globalplastictreaty #INC5 #INC #TrailtoBusan

📅 On 26 November 2024, World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, facilitated by Indonesia NPAP, convened a session on Navigating Just Transition to Deliver Global Plastic Treaty (As part of Rethinking Plastic Life Event) on the sidelines of INC-5 in Busan, South Korea. The session explores and exchanges knowledge to facilitate a just transition in addressing plastic pollution under the global plastic treaty in Indonesia.   🔈The session was initiated by Opening Remarks from Rofi Alhanif, Deputy Assistant for Circular Economy and Environmental Impact, Ministry of Food Affairs, followed by keynote remarks by Karine Siegward, Senior Advisor, IUCN, and Dr. Alexandra Harrington, IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, Task Force on Plastics Pollution Chair.   🎤 The session featured expert speakers from: - Bella Charlesworth, Research Associate, UNSW Centre for Development Reform - Rocky P., World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia Ocean & Plastic Waste Manager/ Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership Manager - Dhedy Adi Nugroho, Head of Public Affairs, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia - Tiza Mafira, Executive Director, Dietplastik Indonesia   ✨ Here are the highlights of the discussion: -The implementation of the Global Plastic Treaty will have a fundamental impact on the stakeholders across the plastic lifecycle, from workers, waste collectors, consumers, retailers, the informal sector, and local communities. A 'just transition' is needed to make sure that no one is left behind. -Recognizing justice that considers the different needs between groups is critical to ensure a just transition that is fair and equitable. -Reuse solutions can bring economic recovery and social benefits, compensating economic loss due to transition in reducing plastic pollution -Successful implementation of the just transition when the treaty is implemented will require buy-ins and participation from diverse stakeholders. #indonesaNPAP #NPAP #globalplastictreaty #INC5 #INC #TrailtoBusan
