Behind the slogans and newspeak that pretend to provide an answer, there is no will or resolve to address climate crisis. There is no shakeup in the logic of energy supply expansion, no braking and curtailing of energy and material consumption speeds. The electrification of transportation system, along with the new dependency on battery minerals, has been the trigger to colonize territories replete in such minerals in Indonesia and other states in the global South. While the G20 states as a machinery of global investment glorify the so-called low-carbon economy, they simply swapped their support from fossil-based energy to “new and renewable energy,” from fossil-fueled vehicles to electric vehicles. Despite Jokowi's pride in nickel mining and its downstreaming, the environment and local residents have suffered significant consequences. In Halmahera, JATAM documented the current situation, with a particular emphasis on the large-scale nickel industrial operations that are managed by IWIP and a number of integrated companies that supply nickel ore to IWIP. Our primary concern is the multifaceted violence that locals are forced to endure. These include the deprivation of clean water and food, the deteriorating health of Halmahera residents, the devastation caused by the deforestation, and the various forms of criminalization and intimidation that local communities and mining workers face as a result of the operation of nickel mines. Melky Nahar, coordinator at the Mining Advocacy Network, or Jatam, said mining concessions would not be lucrative for religious organisations as “mining is not a sustainable [business]”. “The economic model that is being pushed is unsustainable, very destructive, because it has more harm than benefits, particularly in the areas of food, water, and health in the places where the mines are,” Melky said. He called the new regulation a form of “transactional politics between Jokowi and these mass organisations”, referring to Indonesia’s president by his popular nickname. “They [religious organisations] have supported Jokowi’s regime a lot over the last 10 years. He offers these concessions so that religious organisations remain supportive of him after October,” Melky said. https://lnkd.in/gHq_X_Zt

On Obi’s southeastern coast and on the small adjacent island of Malamala, a huge nickel mining operation has stripped the hills of trees and gouged deep scars into the ocher earth. The sea—elsewhere in these islands a shimmering palette of turquoise, teal, and aquamarine—has turned a dull brown that residents call kemerahan (“reddish”). In a 2020 paper, Aris documented 11 different local species of fish that had an “accumulation of heavy metals” that was destroying their organs and that could cause health problems for humans who eat them. https://lnkd.in/gnMWDUhU
