It was my distinct honor to represent Project STOP at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum 2024. Together with my fellow panelists from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs Republic of Indonesia, UNDP in Asia and the Pacific and Clean Rivers we discussed the importance of collaboration across sectors to address the complex issue of mismanaged waste. Congratulations to the governments of #Indonesia and #UAE for organizing this important event. Summarized key learnings by Project STOP: 🤝 Project STOP is designed to catalyze large scale impact through the collaborative efforts of its partners. All partners take an important role in Project STOP. Working together we are stronger. 📢 The Indonesian national- and local governments take leadership with the support of our team. Inclusion of the communities and local ownership are an important part of our model. Continued guidance and leadership from national ministries are essential. These institutions best understand the needs and potential pathways for progress in Indonesia. ♻ Project STOP is not just an “end of pipe” waste management program. Upstream, we partner with NGO’s and academic partners and pilot waste prevention schemes. Downstream, we work with private sector companies, including local recycling companies. We develop circular economy solutions to keep the value of materials in a circular loop, transforming waste into a valuable feedstock for recycling. Continued cross-sector collaboration is vital to scaling up circular waste management in Indonesia Panelists from right to left: Butti Almheiri, Sujala Pant, Rofi Alhanif and Anthony Berthold

Project STOP marks further major milestones in 2023 and significant progress in the Project STOP Banyuwangi Hijau expansion programme. As of the end of 2023, Project STOP, co-founded by Borealis and Systemiq Ltd., has now provided in collaboration with its partners including the Government of Indonesia and our strategic partners from across the public, private and nonprofit sectors, almost 400,000 people with access to comprehensive waste services, enhancing community well-being and environmental sustainability. The initiative has generated close to 300 full-time jobs across all locations, bolstering local economies and collecting more than 60,000 tonnes of waste, including nearly 9,000 tonnes of plastic. In 2023, we handed over city projects in Pasuruan, East Java, and Jembrana, Bali, to the local government. We are now focused on the expansion of the Project STOP Banyuwangi Hijau programme in East Java. In September 2023, Project STOP opened a new material recovery facility (MRF) with a daily processing capacity of 84 tonnes of waste per shift. This facility, located in Songgon municipality, Banyuwangi, has started collecting and sorting waste from local households and is already providing access to waste services to more than 13,500 people in 12 villages.
