Let's discuss how climate change exacerbates child marriage in northern Jakarta, where coastal community lives with Mongabay-Indonesia . Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, considered as the largest metropole in south-east Asia, and also economical, cultural and political center of Indonesia. In 2024, it is estimated that 11 Millions more people live in this city. The Golden Triangle of Jakarta is one of the fastest evolving CBD's in the Asia-Pacific region. It has more buildings taller than 150 metres than any other Southeast Asian or Southern Hemisphere cities #ClimateChange also affects Jakarta, such as frequent floods and thunderstorms. Especially in northern part of Jakarta, monsoon flooding creates further challenges for some of the already poor community to live. At the sametime, climate change also affects how local fisheries community makes their livelihood. This impoverishment and also gender inequality have become the driving factors for parents to send their girls into marriage life. Hence, teenage/adolescent pregnancy and early motherhood are things that can be easily found here. Naturally, it is followed by girls dropping out from schools. Mongabay Indonesia has documented this in their documentary https://lnkd.in/g9MypPj7 IPAS Indonesia also sees similar situation in our programs in Central Sulawesi Province - both in coastal and agricultural communities. Our findings on a study prior to implementing the program, highlighted that climate crisis links strongly with further impoverishment and can lead to early forced child marriage/union. We need to start discussing this issue, how climate change putting girls in higher risks for #ChildMarriages, teenage/adolescent pregnancy, and girls having to cease chasing their dreams because of school drop out following this. Climate adaptation should not mean letting girls stops dreaming of better future for themselves.

🌍 Geographic conditions, limited access to services, persistent myths about contraceptive methods, and patriarchal norms remain key challenges in advancing Family Planning in Indonesia. To address this, IPAS Indonesia is taking two strategies: 1️⃣ Training midwives, equipping them to deliver high-quality contraceptive services and support. 2️⃣ Partnering with local organizations to train community leaders and health workers, ensuring accurate contraceptive information to communities. Please join us on International Youth Day as we discuss the interconnected issues of child marriage, teenage pregnancy and school dropout (often referred to as the ‘CTS nexus’). To address this complex reality, we need holistic approaches that work across all sectors of society and empower young people to take the lead on improving youth sexual and reproductive health and rights. Our speakers will share strategies and case studies that address the CTS nexus, highlighting the importance of both data and movement building for successful, sustainable solutions.
