As 'Cyber Monday' gets set to beat big brother 'Black Friday' this year with online sales, Retailers everywhere are looking to maximise the biggest shopping event of the year.⁣⁣ ⁣ However, online retailing does not come without risks. Card not present transactions are the most vulnerable to chargebacks and fraud.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ With fraudsters getting more sophisticated, figures show a 26% jump in scams in the first half of last year. According to the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland , victims were conned out of €8.6m in the first six months of 2023 through authorised push payment fraud, involving online and mobile banking transfers.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Fraudsters are using more convincing types of scams, which use the names and branding of well recognised banks and businesses to draw in their victims.⁣ The Banking and Payment Federation are advising customer to use their checklist to avoid scams this busy shopping season:⁣ ⁣ - Always use trusted and well-known websites - you can verify the website on the FraudSMART website https://lnkd.in/ePwZKWU6 - Be cautious of unsolicited emails or social media ads offering deals. Verify the authenticity of special offers by visiting the official website of the company directly rather than clicking on links in emails or ads.   - Avoid making payments through bank transfers as these are harder to trace and recover. - Do not use unsecured or public Wi-Fi networks when making payments – switch to 3G/4G on your phone if necessary. - Keep a record of your purchase, print or save a copy of your order. - Keep your computer’s security up to date with reliable antivirus and browser software. - Keep your card in your sights and protect your PIN – never share or write down your PIN details. As the busy shopping season approaches, so does the risk of encountering fake websites. Fraudsters take advantage of the Christmas rush by creating convincing but fraudulent sites designed to steal your personal information or money. We spoke to FraudSMART to find out about some key tips to stay safe when shopping online this festive season: Check for HTTPS: Before entering any payment details, make sure the website URL starts with "https." This signals that the site is secure. But remember, fraudsters can manipulate this too - so look for other signs of legitimacy. Be Cautious with Email Links: Avoid clicking on links in promotional emails. Instead, go directly to the retailer's website by typing the URL into your browser to ensure you're on the correct site. Too Good to Be True?: Be wary of offers that seem unrealistically good. Scammers use heavy discounts to lure people in, so if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always double-check by contacting the retailer. Check Contact Details: A trustworthy website will provide legitimate contact information, like a phone number, email, or physical address. If this information is missing or looks suspicious, it’s a red flag. According to Niamh Davenport, Head of FraudSMART and Financial Crime at the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), fraudsters are constantly evolving, finding new and sophisticated ways to scam people out of their hard earned money. A recent scheme involves a text message pretending to be from the victim's bank, claiming that a new direct debit has been set up on their account.⁣ ⁣ Niamh Davenport explains, “The text tells recipients that if they didn’t authorise the direct debit, they should immediately call the number provided.” This type of scam is designed to resemble legitimate messages from banks or service providers, making it appear credible. Impersonating Banks and other legitimate businesses is not new but the way they communicate it is.⁣ ⁣ In this scam, fraudsters contact customers by text, pretending to be bank representatives. They tell customers to call a fake number, where another criminal, posing as someone from the bank’s fraud department, warns them their account is at risk. The criminal then instructs the customer to transfer money to a “safe account” to protect their funds. The customer is given a fake IBAN to set up as a new payee in their banking app or online banking, which allows the scammer to take full control of the transferred funds. Sometimes, the criminal sends a follow up text with a fake transaction reference to make the transfer look legitimate and delay suspicion. ⁣ To help the public stay vigilant, FraudSMART offers the following advice:⁣ ⁣ - Ignore unsolicited messages: Do not respond to texts requesting personal or financial details.⁣ - Use trusted contact information: If unsure, always use the bank's contact number on the back of your debit or credit card, rather than any number provided in a text.⁣ - Avoid suspicious links: Banks will never send a link in a text message, so refrain from clicking any unexpected links.⁣ - Don’t be pressured: If someone on the phone is pressuring you to act immediately, hang up and call your bank’s official number instead.⁣ - Guard your information: Never share personal details, card numbers, account information, or security credentials like your PIN or passwords over the phone or text.⁣ ⁣ Remember, a cautious approach to unexpected texts and calls is the best way to protect yourself.
