The alcohol industry is unrelenting in its attempts to hide the detrimental reality of its product from consumers & continues to try to undermine public health efforts. Data from today’s Healthy Ireland survey indicates an increase in proportion of population who consume alcohol & an increase in binge drinking. Points to real need for new gov to ensure a dedicated strategy to address alcohol issues. https://lnkd.in/ehTa8HqG

Great to see this call from Estonia health minister to tie alcohol excise duty to inflation. Similar approach needed in Ireland where excise duties have not changed in 11 years and are losing their public health value. https://lnkd.in/emJYQ8Kg

Alcohol industry has extensive access to policy makers in Irl and the outcome is slow progress in reducing alcohol consumption & high levels of harm including €12bn cost annually. There is a need for a framework to guide all gov interactions with health harming industries. https://lnkd.in/eUBs4sPh

Our new guest opinion piece from Emil Juslin Director of Advocacy at IOGT-NTO examines industry influence on EU policy re alcohol product labelling. Key message is that the alcohol industry must be excluded from health policy making. The tobacco industry would not be allowed the same level of access as alcohol. The stalling of progress at EU level illustrates the continuing importance of Ireland's significant movement on health information regulations in this space. Political parties are publishing their manifestos for #GE2024 with promises to increase many public services including health and security. However we could reduce demand and harm by preventative action to reduce alcohol consumption. This needs coherent cross-gov policy making.
