    💡 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫. In my last post, I shared how a micromanager drained my motivation—demanding control over every detail, dismissing my ideas, and leaving me feeling undervalued. It was exhausting. But not all managers are like that. In fact, I’ve also experienced the complete opposite: leaders who 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞, 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰. And that changed everything… 🔸 They gave me 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 and believed in my expertise. 🔸 Instead of watching over my shoulder, they provided 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 when needed. 🔸 They challenged me with 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, not just tasks. 🔸 Feedback wasn’t about control—it was about 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. 🔸 They cared about me as a 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧, not just an employee. How they've done it: 🔹 I doubted my ability to lead an initiative. ➡️ "𝘐 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶." they said. 🔹 I struggled to meet deadlines and broke down in our 1:1 due to depression. ➡️ "𝘚𝘩𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘱. 𝘛𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥." they said. 🔹 I asked, "I want to challenge myself. Is there anything I can take off your plate or support you with?" ➡️ "𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺, 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨?" they said. 🔹 I suggested ways to improve team efficiency. ➡️ "𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦." they said. 🔹 I voiced my frustration about how they handled a situation that affected me. ➡️ "𝘐 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘓𝘦𝘵'𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳." they said. 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬—𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬. And that’s exactly what happened: because they empowered me, I became more confident in my skills, made bolder decisions, and grew faster in my career.     😱 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫! 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞?: 🔸 I had to explain my daily plan in a 15-minute meeting every morning. 🔸 I was asked to prepare a detailed weekly plan. 🔸 Every email I sent had to be seen and approved. 🔸 They even interfered, got frustrated with the fonts and margins I chose to use in my presentations & documents. And this was when I had 10+ years of experience! To address the situation, I tried the following: 🔹 I worked on building trust through open and clear communication. ➡️ "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴," they said. 🔹 I delivered my work consistently and on time. ➡️ "𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦, 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳," they said. 🔹 I gave feedback and shared how micromanagement made me feel. ➡️ "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦," they said. 🔹 I suggested ways to improve team efficiency. ➡️ "𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘫𝘰𝘣," they said. 🔹 I prepared quarterly plans, goals, and a long-term roadmap. ➡️ "𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺'𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵," they said. 🤷🏻♀️ But sadly, nothing changed. In the end, I was left with one option: I resigned. As I write this now, I feel frustration, but also gratitude. That experience helped me gain clarity and confidence to establish my own career coaching business. (𝐎𝐡 𝐡𝐞𝐲, 𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐞𝐱-𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫, 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬—𝐡𝐢 👋! This was me for years, until I decided to hit "apply" for a role at Google and that decision changed the entire course of my career. And here's why you should go for it anyway: 📊 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 100% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐞𝐝. In fact, hiring managers often look for candidates who meet 60-70% of the qualifications and demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow. 💡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐩 - Studies reveal that women tend to apply only when they meet 100% of the criteria, while men often apply when they meet around 60%. This hesitation can hold you back from opportunities you’re fully capable of excelling in. But how often do you look into the company's "About Us" page? This page has a ton of info that can help you stand out from other candidates. That is why I have been spending most of my time reviewing the "About Us" page to refine my examples, answers and questions aligned with that information: ✨ 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬: Understand the company’s guiding principles. Do they put customers first, push for new ideas, or care about sustainability? Do they align with your own values? If you match your answers to these values, it shows you've done your research. 👥 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Leadership shapes culture. What can you learn about what they want and where they see the company going? Is their leadership team diverse? If you bring up something new they've done or something they've said, it can make a big impact. 📰 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬: Did they just launch a new product, grow a lot, or win something cool? Talking about this shows you're interested and in touch with what matters to the company right now. 📊 𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬: Their size, market share, or financial results might hint at challenges or opportunities in your job. Knowing these facts allows you to put your work into context. Here are three red flags to keep in mind: 1️⃣  𝐕𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 If the role’s responsibilities or success metrics are unclear, it might mean the company lacks structure or has unrealistic expectations. Ask for specifics, and if they can’t clarify, proceed with caution. 2️⃣  𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Long delays, unprofessional behaviour, or confusing instructions during the hiring process might signal deeper organizational issues. A company that values candidates communicates clearly. 3️⃣ 𝐍𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐃𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬 Pay attention to how interviewers speak about their teammates or the company.
