The horticulture sector is a diverse, low environmental impact industry of plant and food produce and one of the most carbon efficient sectors in Irish agriculture. 🌱 However, the horticulture sector is facing many industry-wide challenges including labour intensity, increasing input costs, low margins in retail, changing climate conditions, food waste, and limited investment and funding opportunities for innovation by primary producers, to name a few. Over the past few months, the Innovation Hub team at CAP Network Ireland have been running a Horticulture Knowledge Transfer Pilot where we have been connecting with stakeholders across Ireland and abroad who have identified or implemented knowledge, research or innovations that may hold real world solutions to these challenges. During this ongoing initiative, I have had many engaging and inspiring conversations with actors in the field and have learned so much from participating projects and organisations who have shared their knowledge about a diverse range of exciting innovations. I would like to thank everyone who has participated in this pilot to date and look forward to further collaborations. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing and promoting these identified innovations on our new Knowledge Hub over at CAP Network Ireland. Together, with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and other experts in the field, we will also continue to explore how this knowledge could be impactful in an Irish context, and are working to identify opportunities for transferring this knowledge for wider uptake and development in Ireland. Keep an eye on our Knowledge Hub below for updates and to learn more about exciting horticultural innovations. 🌱 #Horticulture #AgriInnovation #SustainableDevelopment EU CAP Network

🌱 Smart Farming & Bioeconomy: Shaping Tomorrow's Agriculture 🚜♻️ As part of #Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2024, Munster Technological University hosted a dynamic morning of workshops at Teagasc Clonakilty Agricultural College. Farmers, researchers, and bioeconomy experts came together to explore how smart farming practices, and the circular bioeconomy can drive sustainable agriculture. 🌍✨ The focus? Tackling North-West Europe’s reliance on fossil-based fertilisers through innovative solutions like recycling-derived fertilisers (RDF). Discussions highlighted opportunities and challenges, from improving soil health 🌾 to addressing concerns like affordability, contamination risks, and supply chain logistics. 💡 Key takeaway: Co-developing tailored strategies with stakeholders is crucial for unlocking RDF’s potential in Irish agriculture. Urban green waste also showed promise as a complementary resource to enhance sustainability goals and community impact. 🚀 Check out the mind map generated from the workshop, capturing key insights and ideas shared by participants—an exciting glimpse into the collaborative vision for nutrient recycling! 👏 Big thanks to the #ReNu2Cycle team and partners #SIMONE_NWE Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) and MainstreamBIO Project for organizing this engaging event. Together, we’re paving the way for a greener, more circular future. 🌿 #Bioeconomy #SustainableFarming #CircularEconomy #Innovation #RDF #SmartFarming #SIMONE_NWE #ReNu2Cycle Niamh Power S.M.
