If the 400 in the room at the ESG SUMMIT this week at least half were sustainability professionals. There was a big focus on reporting but also a hint of degrowth and wider material impacts.
Thanks to the Business Post for inviting me to chair Stream 2 of the ESG SUMMIT this week. These are my Takeaways from the day: 🌟 Everyone’s job should be a climate job. 😱 Philip Boucher-Hayes kicked off with the Ipcc report is not reflective of what scientists are saying, it’s far worse than we think! We are heating the earth’s oceans at the equivalent rate of setting off 14 Hiroshima bombs every second for the last year… Bring CSRD compliant is not the level of ambition we need, we need a much bolder vision 🇪🇺Neil Makaroff If we implement the EU Green Deal then we can reduce the need for oil and gas by a third by a third. But there an opportunity to reduce it much further faster. China has half the amount of all electric cars on the road and account for 39% of all money spent on renewable tech Neil also highlighted the issue of extracting lithium in Portugal and then exporting to China and then importing the finished battery back from China rather than making the battery and the car in Europe 💡John Barcroft: What is the objective, a business doing sustainability or being a sustainable business? Is there sufficient experience at board level? We need to change business models and think about OPPORTUNITIES not threats 🇪🇺Derarca Dennis - EY Sustainability report, 26% of companies have not engaged with the supply chains at all. It’s an opportunity for finance, sustainability and risk to work together. 💰Ciarán Hughes CFP® from Ethico: You can have a say about where your pension is invested and it will be one of the things that will have the most impact. 📖 Maria Kelly - We need transversal skills. Think of the soft skills like collaboration, empathy, critical thinking and communication skills. 🤔 Geoff Dooley from Antaris brought up the question of going beyond CSRD and making a contribution to global net zero, and the evolving landscape means we could see a scope 4 emissions category. There were many more takeaways, especially in my stream discussing the transition to Net Zero. With Aisling Ryan Michael Rice Madeleine Murray Audrey O'Shea Geoff Dooley Aebhín Cawley What I did take away from today was some hope!

Have you ever thought that what you do, as one person, doesn’t make a difference? This powerful talk by Jennifer Hough will have you thinking differently! Consider that you have always been a movement of one, but you have likely never thought of yourself that way. The world does not change from looking to our leaders, the world changes through billions of people answering one powerful question, which you will see in this TEDX Talk with Jennifer Hough. Are you ready to be a Movement of One? What would happen if we all woke up tomorrow morning, and maybe every morning after that, asking the question: What is a contribution that I can make with the skills that I already have, that would have me getting up inspired and going to bed satisfied that I made someone else's world or the world in general, a better place?
