International Day of Education is a celebration of education for peace and development. Supporting this day works towards SDG4 Quality Education and SDG10 Reduced Inequalities. Today, 250 million children and youth still do not attend school 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic maths Less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school Around 4 million children and youth refugees are out of school Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable Better education will help to solve the climate crisis What can we do? Eating seasonally is a great way to lower your carbon footprint as it drastically reduces food miles and means the plants haven’t been artificially heated to be grown out of season. It’s a great way to vary your diet, discover new flavours and seasonal veg is often cheaper too! Fruits Oranges and lemons are coming into season in January from warmer climates like Spain Apples (Bramley) Clementines Kiwi fruit (in season from mid-Jan) Passion fruit Pears Pomegranate Vegetables The ground can be hard if there have been frosts Much of the veg patch can be hibernating right now Irish and British veg is in its prime!
