The supporters of the Elephant in the Room family continues to grow worldwide. This week at the inspirational Pendulum Leadership Summit, another dream of mine was realised, when legendary sporting stars Sugar Ray Leonard and Andre Agassi both embraced what we are trying to do. Both men epitomise the mantra of “It not being weak to speak”, and also the importance of positive mental health in overcoming the many obstacles put in front of them to ultimately achieve what they did. They underlined the fact that mental fortitude and growth is every bit as important as the physical in sport, and even more important especially when dealing with the dark days, loss and failure. Often it is the mind that drives the body and not the other way around, and to learn to get back up and fight even when the odds are stacked against you. I was both star struck and humbled just to be in the company of these great sporting men that I admired for so long, and not just for what they achieved in their respective sporting careers, but more for how they found their real purpose in life. That giving back to family and others is perhaps worth more than the many sporting accolades they have achieved, they have changed their own lives for the good now they get a chance to change other peoples lives? How powerful is that, and we can all do that too in our own lives. Their huge generosity and philanthropic nature is such a part of who they have proudly become. Not only that, they were both such quiet, humble and genuine gentlemen of sport. I would love to try an get an elephant out to one of their youth/school programmes for under privileged children, as a further symbol of hope and permission to be more vulnerable and open around our mental health.  Special thanks to my rugby friend Frankie Sheehan and his inspirational wife Norma for continuing to be at the forefront of bringing inspirational world renowned speakers to the Dublin Summit each year and to artist Rob McCormack who painted the wonderful images. We are trying to create a movement with our simple yet effective Elephant in the room movement (EITR) so please repost or re-share if you support our message. #Pendulum Summit # Sugar Ray Leonard # Robert McCormack #mental health awareness

Monty the elephant joins the herd of the Elephant In The Room Movement. Brent spoke to two Mount Anville Secondary School assemblies this morning, 1st to 3rd years (proud youngest daughter listening in), and then 4th to 6th years (proud eldest daughter listening in). This 6'4 former All Blacks Giant, bared his sensitive soul to c.700 young women and girls, telling stories of his personal struggles with anxiety, panic attacks, and feelings of inadequacy and isolation. Sound familiar? Mental illness does not discriminate, male/female, tall/short, young/old. Brent's message is simply this - it's not weak to speak, it's ok not to be ok. Talk to someone, and, if someone talks to you be sure to listen. We can all save lives this way. I'll be keeping an eye on this one, can't wait to see what the winning design(s) look like. I’m excited and proud to share that MAPPA has partnered with the Elephant In The Room Movement movement and Brent Pope to adopt an elephant for our school—a powerful step in raising awareness about mental health and encourage open conversations, free from stigma and judgment. This initiative is especially close to my heart and the MAPPA community and I had the privilege of hearing Brent Pope, founder of the Elephant in the Room movement, speak about this vital cause last year. His passion and dedication made it clear that Mount Anville needed to be involved in this important movement. His words resonated deeply and one powerful message stands out: “It’s not weak to speak.” This mantra is something I believe we all need to carry forward into 2025. We’re also thrilled that the Art Department, led by Andrew Rice, will be running a school-wide competition to design and decorate our elephant—aptly named Monty! I can’t wait to return in a few months for the grand reveal! A huge thank you to Principal Sinead Nolan, Vice Principal Elaine Kelly, and all the teachers and staff at Mount Anville for your unwavering support in launching this incredible initiative. I’d also like to express my gratitude to past pupil Amanda Daly and her husband Karl Daly for introducing us to this inspiring movement. Together, we can make a difference in mental health awareness and create a community where every voice is heard. #MentalHealthAwareness #ElephantInTheRoom #MAPPA #MountAnville #MentalHealthMatters #CommunitySupport #Education

    Healthy Campus at Maynooth University

We are so excited that our Maynooth University ‘Elephant in the Room’ sculpture is now in place at the heart of our campus! This project was a privilege to work on.   The sculpture was unveiled last month by our President Prof Eeva Leinonen, EIR founder Dave Southern and Helen Doyle, a PhD scholar in the Department of History, who first proposed having the sculpture at MU. At the unveiling event Prof Eeva Leinonen, remarked on the importance of the sculpture: “At Maynooth University, we are committed to fostering a campus where mental health and well-being are prioritised, so that no one feels alone in their struggles. The unveiling of our ‘Elephant in the Room’ sculpture is both a symbol and a reminder that mental health challenges are a part of life, and seeking support is a sign of strength. Through this sculpture and the resources it represents, we aim to send a clear message to our community: you are not alone, and support is always here for you."   The sculpture was painted by professional artist, Karolina Di Duca, based on artwork submissions received from MU staff and students around the themes of openness, compassion, inclusivity and support. A competition was then held to ‘name the elephant’. This week it was announced that the winning name is Hope. This name, suggested by staff and students 20 times in various languages—English, Irish (Dóchas) and Hindi/Sanskrit (Asha)—was the most popular choice among the 366 entries.   We believe that ‘Hope’ perfectly captures the optimism, compassion, and courage at the heart of this mental health awareness initiative. Hope will now travel across campus, serving as a powerful reminder that no challenge is too small to seek support for, and that help is always available. We are very much looking forward to attending the Elephant In The Room Movement inaugural Gala Ball this evening at Dublin’s Intercontinental Hotel.   VMG are proud to be part of the EITR movement in support of mental health awareness. Recruitment is a very tough industry. It’s not for the faint hearted and like an elephant, you have to have a “thick skin”. There are great highs, but also great lows. Often, the lows outweigh the highs, so you need to be resilient. Despite being a profession that is rooted in daily human interactions, it can often be lonely and isolating. As a recruitment business, we want to bring as much awareness to people’s mental health as possible and can’t think of a better way than having our Elephant “Joe”, sitting pride of place in our window!   Well done to Brent Pope Brent Pope and all the EITR team and roll on this evening!
